OF ASA MESSER,S.T.D.LL.D. \nBY A.N ALUMNUS. \nTHE Commencement of Brown University in 1866 wasmarked by a public service of very uncommon interest to thealumni, and of no little interest to all scholars and educators. It had been selected as a fitting time for the assembled friendsof the university to review with public honors the life andcharacter of its late president,Francis Wayland, who withinthe year had passed from among us,and taken his place in theranks of the illustrious dead. The time and place had beenhappily chosen. All the clustering associations of the dayand the scene conspired to bring the late president to ourthoughts.IVe were on the grounds where he had done hiswork and achieved his victories.Since his retirement fromthe presidency,we had been accustomed still to meet him atthese annual gatherings. Now we missed his familiar pres-ence.The feeling awakened by his absence was not unlikethat which we have experienced when returning to the homeof our youth for the first time after the death of an honoredfather. Our minds were in that mood of saddened thoughtjust fitted to listen to a recital of his history, and to retraceand fill up for ourselves the outlines of such a moral and in-tellectual picture of our departed literary chief as we mightbe satisfied henceforth to cherish in our memory, and to carrywith us as an incentive to honorable efforts and noble deeds. \n4 \nThe speaker also had been selected with the same goodjudgment. The task of delivering the commemorative ad-dress had been assigned to a distinguished pupil of the latepresident, one who, almost from the beginning, had been in-timately associated with him in all his plans and efforts to pro-mote the cause of learning and science, and the best interestsof the university. To these advantages of the speaker forhis work were united ripe scholarslip, nice powers of dis-crimination,and an affection for his great master and friend, which insured for the task he had to perform all the zeal andfidelity that filial reverence could inspire. In a word, thework to be done and the man appointed to do it were veryhappily suited to each other. The subject for delineation hadfeatures strongly marked. The painter had seen them in alltheir varied play.As the result,we have,in the address de-livered on that occasion,a portrait of Dr.IVayland's intellect-ual,moral,and religious character, such as all can recognizefor its truthfulness, and the friends of the university may con-template with equal pride and pleasure. \nHaving thus given free utterauce to our cordial feelings ofrespect for the great worth and efficient labors of the latepresident,Dr.Wayland,no one can, with any show of justice, aceuse us of wishing to pluck a single leaf from the chaplet ofhis wellearned fame.As little can any one accuse us of wisl1-ing to underrate tlhe ability and artistic skill with which thefilial piety of the pupil has striven to delineate the virtues, and embalm the memory,of his venerated master. We heart-ily rejoice in all the excellences of both, and proudly holdthem as part of the accumulating treasures of our AlmaMater. But there are parts of the address from which we e1-tirely dissent, and which excite our regret. These refer tothe condition and administration of the college in the earlierperiods of its existence, and especially in that of Dr.Vay-land's immediate predecessor. \nIt has long been the fashion to speak of Brown Universityas though it had never risen much above the rank of a com-mon academy until it came into the hands of President Vay-land.This has been most industriously and persistently said \n5 \nand sung. For more than a ","cbCaimcHl4qbOFLk","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimcHl4qbOFLk","pdf",1463571,28,"English","# Brown University’s 1866 Commencement\n##
