BRITISH LITERATURE |\n| --- |\n| ELIZABETHAN & JACOBEAN DRAMA |\n\n1. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE \nWilliam Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s greatest dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon.”His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. He was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613.Until about 1608, he wrote mainly tragedies, among them Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In 1623, two fellow actors and friends of Shakespeare, John Heminges and Henry Condell, published a more definitive text known as the First Folio, a posthumous collected edition of Shakespeare’s dramatic works that included all but two of his plays. The volume was prefaced with a poem by Ben Jonson, in which Jonson famously hailed Shakespeare as “not of an age, but for all time.” \nThe preface poem by Ben Jonson in the First Folio praises Shakespeare’s greatness and suggests that readers should value his writings more than his portrait, emphasizing the timeless power of his literary works.Shakespeare was probably educated at the King's New School in Stratford. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway in 1582, who was 26 years old at the time.Nicholas Rowe, Shakespeare’s first biographer, recounted a Stratford legend that Shakespeare fled the town for London to escape prosecution for deer poaching in the estate of local squire Thomas Lucy.He was also attacked in print by the playwright Robert Greene in his work Groats-Worth of Wit, where Greene referred to him as an “upstart Crow” and mocked his rising success in the theatre world. The Second Folio is the 1632 edition of the collected plays of \n1 \nShakespeare and followed the First Folio of 1623. Much of the language was updated in this edition, and there were almost 1,700 changes. \nThe Third Folio and Fourth Folio later appeared in 1663 and 1685 respectively, continuing the publication tradition of Shakespeare’s collected works. The False Folio is the term used by scholars for William Jaggard’s printing of ten Shakespearean and pseudo-Shakespearean plays together in 1619, which was the first attempt to collect Shakespeare’s works in a single volume.Nineteen of Shakespeare’s plays first appeared in quarto editions before the publication of the First Folio in 1623, and eighteen of these were published before his death in 1616. One play co-authored with John Fletcher, The Two Noble Kinsmen, was first published in 1634. Another play, The Taming of the Shrew, first appeared in the First Folio and was later published in quarto form.William Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616. To honor his legacy and the importance of literature, UNESCO established World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April, also known as the International Day of the Book. 􀀀 \nWorks list of william Shakespeare \n1.
