\nGetting to know the Church of the Brethrenis like finding out about the family next door.Who are the Brethren? The answer lies in partwith the images that have captured their attentionand guided their responses.Like other Christiangroups, they have drawn upon Biblical themesand metaphors. They have been selective in theirreading and hearing.More accurately, they havebeen selected by certain cherished stories andword pictures of the Bible which have held Breth-ren together through different and difficult periodsof time. \nHere are events and images that have shapedthe life of Brethren at very deep levels: \n—Jesus suffering at the hands of his oppres-sors,falsely accused and condemned, avicarious offering for others; \n—this same Jesus washing the feet of hisreluctant disciples, commanding them todo likewise as a testimony of their willing-ness to serve and to be served; \n—the Good Samaritan binding up the woundsof a needy neighbor, considered by manyas an outsider or even an enemy; \n—a Sermon on the Mount type of disciple......whose \"word is as good as his bond,\" \n...who requires no oaths to bolster hisuncertain integrity, \n...who avoids putting on a show whenpraying and doing good deeds, \n·..who is a peacemaker in the midst ofstrife and alienation, \n...who works as leaven and salt but notas the bearer of a sword, \n...who is willing to suffer persecution forthe sake of righteousness. \nThere are still other Biblical incidents andexamples of behavior which have stirred theBrethren from time to time: \n—Jesus marching to Jerusalem to confrontauthorities,at the risk of creating a dis-turbance on the streets and irritating theestablishment; \n—Jesus routing the money changers from thetemple; \n—Jesus hobnobbing closely enough with Zeal-ots,or with those plotting a violent over-throw of the government,so as to be triedon a conspiracy(complicity)charge;—Amos, the shaggy beatnik farmer fromTekoa, confronting well-to-do landowners;—Moses, the union organizer, leading a mas-sive walkout from the Pharaoh's slaveshops;—Israel gaining its“promised”land throughviolent revolution. \nThese latter happenings and pictures have notalways been as influential in the life and self-understanding of the Brethren.Sometimes theyhave been embarrassing. They have even beena source of tension by suggesting actions thatoffend the prevailing sense of what is fitting be-havior for a Christian. The Brethren have beenconvinced that the“mind of Christ”points ustoward a way that is clearly superior to violenceand revolution.Still, one can imagine that theBrethren at their birthplace of Schwarzenau, inperilous struggle with the church and civil authori-ties,were mightily moved by some of these life-informing references. It is the latter images that \nmotivate those Brethren today engaging in variousdirect action projects on behalf of justice and thewelfare of a dispossessed neighbor. \n三 \narlier we spoke about the possibility of newpeople moving next door.In becoming acquaintedwe would be helped by gaining insight into thefamily's origins. What are their roots?Wheredid they live before?Out of their particular ex-periences what events are remembered and cele-brated as especially significant?
