We are honoured to re-publish it with the author's consent. Furthermore, we are grateful to the dignitaries who wrote some thoughts about the paper and their fond memories with them, which we gladly carried as a tribute on our behalf. \n\"We strongly believe in and practice gender parity in our work. To spread this message weare republishing an excellent paper so that it can inspire others to follow their path.\" \nPradeep S. Mehta \nSecretary General CUTS International \n\"The remarkable role played by pioneering women economists in the reforms that transformed India from a stagnant economy to the giant it is today, needs to be documented, especially in this Year of Women. Pradeep Mehta is to be congratulated on publishing this splendid essay that does precisely this.\"Prof. Jagdish N. Bhagwati, University Professor, Columbia University \n\"This lovely article tells the story of three exceptional daughters of India. It does not conceal the myriad obstacles they confronted, which makes their success in achieving their deserved eminence in economics more remarkable. I have had the privilege of knowing Isher Ahluwalia and Padma Desai personally, and have treasured them as friends and admirable intellectuals. They are role models for the brilliant Indian women who have followed, and will continue to follow, them.\" \nMartin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator, Financial Times \n~~ ~~ 1 \n\"I salute the pioneering women economists who blazed a trail in a competitive field of economics then dominated by men. I had the privilege to meet and be inspired by Padma Desai and Isher Judge Ahluwalia. They were heroes to generations of women who followed on their footsteps.\" \nAmb. Lakshmi M. Puri, Former Assistant Secretary-General, United Nations Former Deputy Executive Director, UN Women \n“I was delighted when Pradeep Mehta told me that CUTS has decided to publish this essay. There aren't enough women on the list of economists who worked on various aspects of the Indian economy. This only reflects the fact that women weren't given opportunities. This essay tells the story of three women who used the opportunities they had to play expanded roles. It should be an inspiration for young women today who have many more opportunities. Not just women, but young men too, could learn about the importance of gender parity.\" \nMontek Singh Ahluwalia, Former Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India \n\"It is an honour to be asked to pen a few lines about two of the leading Indian women economists of post-independence India, Isher Judge Ahluwalia and Padma Desai, both of who I was privileged to know fairly well in the course of my career as a journalist with The Economic Times; Isher, more intimately than Padma Desai. \nBoth were giants in their respective fields, but preferred to stay behind the scenes and allow their husbands – Montek Singh Ahluwalia and \nJagd","cbCaivPZRwOQE8qx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivPZRwOQE8qx","pdf",2272198,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Breaking Out and Through\n## Focus on three pioneering economists\n## Challenges faced and barriers broken\n## Contributions to economics and call for gender parity","[{\"question\":\"Who are the three women highlighted in the essay?\",\"answer\":\"The essay focuses on Padma Desai, Sudha Shenoy, and Isher Judge Ahluwalia, showing their journeys in liberal economics and how they challenged gender barriers.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of challenges did these economists face?\",\"answer\":\"They faced discrimination, bias, and a lack of support and opportunities, reflecting societal expectations that limited women’s participation in economics.\"},{\"question\":\"What message does the essay emphasize beyond individual achievements?\",\"answer\":\"It emphasizes gender parity and balanced representation across disciplines, especially economics, aiming to inspire women and encourage wider societal outreach.\"}]","Breaking Out and Through -
