If the bowel is not adequately clean, the procedure may need to be postponed or repeated, as important findings, such as polyps, could be missed. \nWhat is bowel preparation? \nBowel preparation involves: \n1. Modifying your diet \nTwo (2) days prior to your procedure, you will follow a low fibre or low residue diet with foods that are light/white in colour. Please see page 2 for information on this. \nOne ( 1) day prior to your procedure, you will follow a clear liquids only diet, with no solid food intake. This would include clear liquids such as broth, or clear soups. Please see page 2 for more information on this. \n2. Taking bowel preparation medication \nThe evening prior to your procedure you will take bowel preparation medication called PicoPrep. Depending on the timing of your procedure, you may also take a dose the morning of your procedure. This medication can be purchased from your local pharmacy without a prescription. Please see page 3 for more information on this. \n3. Increasing your fluid intake \nDuring this 2 day process, you should increase your fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Aim to drink 2 litres of water each day. \nWhat are the common side effects of bowel preparation? \nBowel preparation medication is generally safe for most patients to take. That being said, bowel preparation can be uncomfortable to take. The most common side effects that patients experience are: \n● Mild nausea or vomiting \n● Stomach cramps \n● Intestinal gas \n● Dry mouth \n● Increased thirst \nPicoPrep is generally very well tolerated. The only aspect of the medication which tends to pose an issue for most patients is the taste of the prep itself. It can be helpful to refrigerate the PicoPrep mixture to make it easier to drink. \nWhite Low Fibre / Low Residue Diet \nThe white low residue/low fibre diet is followed 2 days prior to colonoscopy, as it does not compromise the quality of the bowel preparation. It consists of eating low fibre food and drinking liquids that are white or pale in colour. \nTHIS DIET SHOULD BE FOLLOWED 2 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE. \nAllowed to Eat/Drink \n● Milk, Some milk alternatives (cow’s milk, soy) . \n● Liquids that are light or translucent in colour (juices, soups, broth, tea and coffee, cordial, lemonade) . \n● White coloured yoghurt (no added fruit) \n● Mayonnaise, cream, sour cream, butter, margarine. \n● White bread (not high fibre) \n● Rice Bubbles \n● Eggs \n● White rice, Plain pasta \n● Potatoes (peeled, no skin) , Well cooked pumpkin (no skin) \n● Rice noodles, Rice crackers (plain) \n● White flour, Sugar \n● Chicken (no skin) , White fish \n● Cheese \nNot Allowed to Eat/Drink \n● Anything not listed in the ‘Allowed’Category \n● Avoid high fibre, white coloured foods such as pears, cauliflower, onion, high-fibre white bread, coconut, porridge, banana, mushrooms, semolina, couscous, popcorn, etc. \n● Avoid all other fruits and vegetables, even in liquid form (ie. smoothies or soup) \n● All nuts, seed and legumes, including nut milks \n● Red meat \n● Fibre supplements ( Metamucil, Benefiber, etc. ) \n● Wholewheat or wholegrain bread, pasta, or cereals \nClear Liquid Diet \nA clear liquid diet should be followed the day prior to your procedure. This is essential to ensuring there are clear views of the bowel for your procedure. You should NOT have anything solid to eat when following this diet. \nTHIS DIET SHOULD BE FOLLOWED THE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE. \nALLOWED: \n● Clear fluids ONLY \n○ Water, Soda water, Lemonade \n○ Non-cloudy juice [no pulp] \n○","cbCaidHNic2FYlvM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidHNic2FYlvM","pdf",223091,"English","# Why bowel preparation is important\n# What is bowel preparation?\n## Modifying your diet\n## Taking bowel preparation medication\n## Increasing your fluid intake\n# Common side effects of bowel preparation\n# White Low Fibre / Low Residue Diet\n# Clear Liquid Diet\n# PicoPrep Instructions\n# Morning Colonoscopy\n# Afternoon Colonoscopy","[{\"question\":\"Why do patients need bowel preparation for a colonoscopy?\",\"answer\":\"Bowel preparation clears the colon so the doctor can inspect the bowel lining clearly, improving examination accuracy.
