She emphasizes bringing culture and language into Western academic and professional learning rather than leaving it outside the classroom. The talk frames Indigenous education as a balance: gaining professional knowledge while staying strong in culture. name is Robin obar um I'm originally\n0:07\nfrom North Queens land I'm a Mamu Gable\n0:09\nwoman from the\n0:11\nrainforest and um I've been in the\n0:14\nNorthern Territory for over 30 years now\n0:17\nmy understanding of both ways is um\n0:21\nacknowledging celebrating recognizing\n0:24\nthe skills the concepts the indigenous\n0:28\nknowledges everything that makes up our\n0:30\nidentity as indigenous people you know\n0:33\ncelebrating that and using that as a\n0:35\nplatform using that as a springboard to\n0:38\nmove on to this new Western uh Academia\n0:42\nstuff that we that we also need we need\n0:44\nthe professional um knowledge we need\n0:46\nthe professional skills but we also need\n0:49\nto be strong in who we are we need to be\n0:51\nstrong in our identity and culture we\n0:53\ndon't want to leave that at the gate we\n0:55\ndon't want to leave that outside the you\n0:57\nknow classroom door and say no I'll\n0:58\nleave that there I'll back to that later\n1:01\nbut I'll go in and learn all this whitef\n1:02\nof stuff no no we bring it in with us\n1:05\nand we be proud of who we are but we but\n1:09\nwe use that to move on to this new um\n1:12\nprofessional domain you know with the\n1:14\nlanguage with the skills with the\n1:16\nconcepts and that that we that are\n1:18\nimperative if we want to be equal in\n1:20\nwhite men's World we need that but we\n1:22\nneed to be also strong and who we are\n1:24\nand don't forget that so it's that\n1:26\nbalance I guess um and one of the things\n1:30\nare you know one of the metaphors that's\n1:32\noften used is the garma metaphor from\n1:35\nNortheast araman and um Dr ma she's\n1:39\nshe's passed away now but you know she\n1:41\nshe'd often talk to me about the salt\n1:43\nwater and the fresh water coming\n1:44\ntogether and complimenting and marbling\n1:47\nnot into an ugly Brew but into a\n1:50\nmarbling effect so there's there's\n1:51\ncompliment we're supporting each other\n1:53\nbut there's also struggles there you see\n1:56\nbecause the currents are moving back and\n1:57\nforth we it's about negotiation it's\n2:00\nabout coming to those places of um uh\n2:03\nagreement and and um of course there's\n2:06\ngoing to be debates there's going to be\n2:08\nyou know arguments and disagreements but\n2:12\nI think Bachelor the thing about\n2:13\nBachelor Institute is is um it's a place\n2:17\nwhere we can have those discussions and\n2:19\nthose conversations and it's also\n2:21\nCutting Edge stuff that that happens\n2:23\nhere so we're very in a very unique um\n2:26\nposition here that we're we're at the\n2:28\nfront line of indigenous education in\n2:30\nall all different fields\nEnglish (auto-generated)\nAllFrom Batchelor Institute - RTO Provider No: 0383RelatedFor
