years.Part of thestory of a nation growing up?Call it growing pains.  \nButfirst,what is this Training Management System that theNational Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP)calls an“impractical”bugbear?In the simplest terms,it is an onlineplatform developed by the ministry to manage and monitorprofessional training and development for teachers and ed-ucation officers.But if the feedback from teachers is of anyguide,the issue isn't the platform per se but the demand itmakes on their time.The form-filling may have gone online,yet it remains a form-filling exercise that disrupts teachingand learningin the classroom.The system's interference withclassroom work is a frequent lament.As this newspaperreported yesterday,the training management system is driv-en by what the school administrators want done,not whetherthe courses are relevant to the needs ofthe teachers.\"In manycases,”NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said “teachers  \nSINAR HARIAN   \nwere required to attend coursesunrelated to their subject special-isation or real classroom require-ments,simply to make up the re-quired training hours”.And thenthere is the system's frequentdown time,forcing teachers towait at the computers to start theprocess all over again.Little won-der the NUTP described the moveby Fadhlina to abolish it as show-ing sensitivity to the mentalstrain and workload faced byteachers nationwide.As part of athree-year reform,Fadhlina haspromised more relief on the wayfor the teachers as the Education  \nTheform-fillingmay have goneonline,yet itremains aform-fillingexercise thatdisrupts teachingand learning inthe classroom.  \nMinistry identifies and addresses factors that burden teach-ers.\"Whenever we identify a way to reduce teachers'burden,we will consider it and assess its impact.\"  \nThis is good news,and so is the ministry's move to focus,from next year onwards,on ensuring teachers could devotethemselves to teaching and learning in the classroom,undis-turbed by administrative demands.Shortage of teachers —which has a direct impact on fellow professionals'workload—is also receiving the attention it deserves.In 2023,6,394teachers went on early retirement,an increase from theprevious year's total of 5,306.Reasons are plenty,but some-where there were“burdened”souls wanting out.We do notknow how many of these vacancies were filled,but we are toldthe Education Service Commission is ensuring teacher short-ages are addressed every year and continuously filled.Work-place improvements are also being implemented in otherways.New school
