She picked at the dirt moons entrenched in her nails where her glove fingers were worn away. Several hours of weeding the front flower beds had painted a sunburn on her back and arms, but one last flat of petunias remained to be planted. She surveyed her work and was catching her breath when the sound of a car barreling up the county road caught her attention, raising the hair on her neck. \"Don't Fear the Reaper\" blared from stereo speakers, the tune warped by speed.  \nOn that beautiful spring day, Lyn held the flowers in quaking hands, the frail violet heads shivering for a few never-ending seconds while she listened. It was about the time Jude should be home from his thirty-mile bike ride. She heard a crunch and a whoosh, the chime of metal on metal, the hiss of lost air, and the car ’s engine still gunning. Later it would bother her that she didn’t hear the squeal of brakes or the screech of rubber drawing on asphalt. No tire tracks of any kind.  \nShe prayed she’d heard a fox or a deer get clipped, but in her heart she knew the grotesque metallic whisper meant nothing would ever be the same again.  \n“Please,” she whispered. Lyn’s guts turned into a bowl of gnashing snakes. What if Jude was hurt, what if he needed her? What if—she  \ndropped the flowers and ran toward the road, straight through the narrow strip of trees, her face slapped and scratched by jagged branches.
