it,wait a minute,'couldbe applied to Wolfe. It wasn't that his character wascontradictory, but that it was so terribly complex....He had his mother’s penny-pinching frugality, but hisfather's lavish love of spending. He could never bringhimself to throw things away, but he lost things—hats, coats, manuscripts, and uncashed checks—continually. He had a gourmet’s passion for good food, but hestarved himself day after day, with only cigarettes andstrong black coffee to sustain him.He had a tendencytoward alcoholism, but he put in more long, sober, grueling hours than anyone on earth.” \n—FROM THE AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTION \nON THE 1RONT COVER:Fireworks at Lyons in honor of LouisXIII and Anne of Austria,December,1622.Engravingby P.F.Lugd from The Mctropolitan Museum of Ari. \nA REPORT BY John Mason Brown \nLIZABETH NoWELL's biography of Thomas Wolfe is a big book about a giantof a man.The excitement that he brought to living quivers on its every page.As few books manage to do,this one by Wolfe's agent and friend succeedsin capturing an author in the turmoil of both his writing and his living. It throbswith the agonies and ecstasies of a turbulent man whose self-concern was gar-gantuan and whose articulateness was incredible. \nE \nMaxwell Perkins, the editor at Scribner's who did so much to give shape andform to Wolfe's first torrential novels, once said to Miss Nowell when talkingabout a biography of Wolfe,\"It would be hard to get Tom right.\"It must havebeen hard to get him right even with his eruptive autobiographical aid.Butgetting him right,in all his moods and complexities,is precisely what Miss Nowellhas done. She has done this by letting him speak for himself and at length, aswell as by speaking ably for him.Her book brilliantly suggests the dualities at war \nwithin him,and helpfully points out for the benefit of toogullible readers where his novels, seemingly autobiographicalthroughout,\"suddenly depart into the realm of pure fiction.\" \nFrom Wolfe's early days in Asheville Miss Nowell hascharted and illumined his stormy life:his apprenticeship asa would-be dramatist with Professor Koch at the Universityof North Carolina, his years at Harvard with ProfessorBaker's 47 Workshop, the violence of his love affair withAline Bernstein, his teaching at New York University, hisgreat friendship with and dependence on Perkins, the enor-mous success of Look Homeward,Angel and Of Time andthe River, the fury of the citizens of Asheville because ofthese novels, his eye-opening trip to Hitler's Germany,hislong-debated break with Scribner's and Perkins, his manylawsuits and personal upheavals, his switch to Harper's andEdward Aswell, his Purdue speech on writing, his con-ferences at Boulder,Colorado, his being stricken in Seattlewith tuberculosis of the brain, his death after an operationat Johns Hopkins and his burial at Asheville. The trust anddistrust, the timidity and confidence, the violence andgentleness, the egotism and humility, the loneliness and
