It describes how to prepare bokashi using carbohydrate food, sugars or bran, and manure, then fermenting the mixture anaerobically at up to 50°C. The guide covers how a bucket system works, which inputs are acceptable, how to maintain an airtight setup, and how to dilute and apply the drained liquid for healthier crops in fields or gardens.","Bokashi for Better Soil Improving fertility without fertiliser \nlevel: intermediate \nEnglish Agriculture \nBokashi for Better Soil Improving fertility without fertiliser \nIt uses material from the public domain Illustrated by MissionAssist \nEnglish Oxfordshire, England \nCopyright © 2023, MissionAssist \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. A farmer from Sierra Leone took a year-long study trip to Japan where he saw the technique in action and wondered if it would work just as well in his own country. When he got home, he tested it out —and found that it did! \nHow to make your own bokashi \n1. Take some cooked rice, or other carbohydrate food, and place it in a piece of split bamboo. \n2. Bury the piece of bamboo up to 18 inches/45 cm deep in the forest and leave it there for 3 days. \n3. When you dig up the piece of bamboo, various microorganisms from the forest floor will have eaten the rice but still remain inside the piece of bamboo. \n4. Take the contents of the bamboo and mix them with brown sugar, rice bran or similar, and soil. \n5. Add water and manure and ferment the mixture at a maximum 50ºC for 5 days. \n6. Harvest the mixture, dry it and store until needed. \nNow you can use bokashi instead of commercial fertilisers to promote the growth of your crops in field or garden. \nHow does bokashi work? \nIn a bokashi system, previously ‘un-compostable’ foods such as meat and dairy products can be broken down through the fermentation process. Unlike traditional composting, in which the breakdown of materials such as grass, leaves and vegetable peelings needs oxygen, fermentation is an anaerobic process in which sugars and starches are converted into alcohol and acids without air. \nThe converted organic material can then be buried in your growing area or even a conventional compost pile in order to provide increased fertility. \nSetting up a bokashi system \nThe simplest way to set up your bokashi system is to use a pair of plastic buckets — if possible a pair of same-size tapered buckets — each one holding about 20 litres (five gallons) .
