Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea,Rachel Carson’sThe Sea Around Us and Cousteau's The Silent World. Now,to join this sterlingcompany, comes Eugenie Clark's Lady with a Spear. This book is not merely inter-esting and informative but is also a personal story that exhales a quite special personalflavor. Both original and unpretentious,it is the kind of thing many readers—and \nT \nparticularly those who like to hear about strange places, strange animals and strangeoccupations-are apt to take fondly to their bosoms. \nEugenie Clark is young, charming, casually brave, and an ichthyologist. She is ofJapanese-Scotch-American ancestry, and, just to keep the record straight, she re-cently married a Greek-American doctor with the majestic name of lias Themis-tokles Papaconstantinou.Ilias—if he will forgive the stenographic familiarity—comesinto the story, and most pleasantly too;but I hope Miss Clark will not take it amissif I state flatly that her book is really an account of a love affair with fish, and in particular a seductive variety called plectognaths.Whether or not thereader finally comes to share Miss Clark's passion for plectognaths,I wagerthat he or she will finish the book with a considerable affection for \nthe author. \nMiss Clark began her fish-loving career at the age of ninewhen she first pressed her nose against the glass tanks of theold Aquarium at Battery Park, where part of the AtlanticOcean ends and New York City begins. She soon had her ownaquarium;and anyone who has raised guppies or goldfish willfind a special fascination in the account of her early experimentswith swordtails and platyfish and the notes she took on theirsurprising mating habits. After passing through a brief periodof puppy love(the metaphor is badly mixed)for horned toadsand a black Racer snake named Rufus, she finally discoveredher true love, and became one of the few (as we may suppose) \nlady ichthyologists in the country.Plectognaths—bizarretropical fish that blow up like balloons,or get along withouttails,or erect spines like porcupines,or grunt like pigs, orstand on their heads—claimed her for their own. \nOff the waters of Southern California she learned to swimunderwater with a face mask, and learned also(what thehuman race has not yet learned with respect to people)thatmost fishes won't bother you if you don't bother them.Shelearned to helmet-dive and got to know that strange sub- \nLeftabove:Miss Clark holdinga thrownetin position for casting.Below:Siakong, perhaps the best spear fisherman in theworld, taught the author his art \nmarine world which so many,if report be true, are now dis-covering as this new and enthralling sport gains devotees.InHawaiian waters and in the American Museum of Natural Historyhere in New York she observed the strange forms life takes, the odd twists and turns of evolution. In West Indian waters sheencountered her first barracuda, and observed the odd conductof Bimini filefishes and \"four-eyed\"fish,and tried to figureout whether a fish can remember with its left eye something ithas learned with its right. \nThen she was off to Micronesia, stopping at Kwajalein andGuam and the Palaus, collecting her specimens with the aid of apoison called rotenone, encountering venomous species, eatingraw squid (here I cannot follow her—Miss Clark has a cast-ironstomach),learning from Siakong,an almost legendary
