0-590-22412-3 \n# for Young Readers\n\nThank you,Parent/Teacher,for choosing Bob Books! \nPicture a child, bright eyed,a big smile, saying happily,\"I read it\".That is the wonderful reward for those who teach children to read. \nBob Books were written by a teacher who loves children. She wanted litle books thatwould quickly lead a child to success in the early stages of learning to read. She wantedthe children to love books,to feel secure, and to have fun. \nShe wanted the stories to be interesting and easy to read. Some values in Bob Bookstories include love, caring for others, respect for animals, forgiveness, and fairness. \nThe illustrations are simple line drawings created to be amusing, revealing of emotions, and calming to the young reader. \nMore Bob Books for Youna Readers is the second set in a series of three. They are theresults of many requests from parents, teachers, and chldren. \nIn Set II,there is a gradual progression beyond short vowels and simple consonantslearned in Set I.Easy consonant blends, such as \"nd”in \"Iand\"and \"mp\"in \"bump\",beginto extend word concepts. \nIn Book 2,endings \"y\",\"er”,and “ed\"are added.Double vowel combinations begin inBook 3.Book 4 grows in complexity as length is increased. The short “i”is used repeatedlywith various consonant combinations.Long vowels with the silent “e”are introduced.Book7 uses color vocabulary which can be an effective teaching unit. The color names aretreated as sight words in the context of progression of sounds in the Bob Book system. \nBooks 4 through 8 are equal in length. Each one introduces new consonant blends.Mostvowel sounds are short, with occasional combinations, either long or irregular. \nWord and sound repetition provides a systematic building of reading vocabulary.Noticethat within each book, there are many related letters and words. \n## How Bob Books Began\n\nBobby Lynn Maslen was a teacher in the Beginning School at Catlin Gabel School,Portland,Oregon,an independent school consisting of students from beginning throughhigh school. \nHer students were four, five, and six years old.She taught in an open classroom of thirty-six children sharing responsibilities with several other teachers.Together they taughtpreparatory reading and math, art, music, and physical and social development.Thechildren and teachers spent very happy time together in work and play. \nOne day, thinking about school,Bobby Maslen bought two small, leather characters at alocal crafts show. They were little figures:one round, the other triangular in shape. She tookthem to school to share with the children. She named them\"Mat\"and “Sam”.They weresuch nice shapes and so simple that she began drawing pictures of them.Soon wordsbegan to develop.\"Mat sat.Sam sat.\"Next little stories were created.Working with onechild at a time, the story would grow into a book. \nThe children found it great fun, watching as words and pictures appeared on the page. They loved taking their books home to share with parents and friends. \nThe problem was that the process was too slow. She couldn't work with as many childrenas she wanted. She felt that they could move faster and lean more. \nSo in the summer, looking oft ideas that had grown throughout the year, she decided towrite a set of little books similar to the originals. They could be more carefully organized instory and would have sounds presented in effective order. \nBloomfield and Barnhart's book,Let's Read was a great help. The concept of consistencyof sounds as used by Pittman in the Initial Teaching Alphabet was also important. \nProviding stories and pictures to be enjoyed by both adult and child was essentialbecause when the teacher is pleased and amused, the child will be a happy reader. \nJohn Maslen,a water color artist, worked closely with her.He created pictures thatexpanded the concept of the characters, but remained true to the simplicity of the originalideas. \n## Suggestions for Teaching Young
