On day 1, the parent or teacher may take more responsibility to show the child how to sort the words and on subsequent days, the child takes more responsibility to sort it on her own. \nOn one of the days that the child has cut apart and sorted the words by their pattern, ask her to copy the sort by writing each word into the Written Sort chart (pg. 4) . \nThe question at the end of the written sort! This is an important step with word sorts! \nWhile sorting, discuss the patterns that the words in the same column share. For example, the words in the short a column only have one vowel (a), while the words in column two (a_e) all have an a and silent e. \nWhile word study doesn’t hinge on rules (because these are so easily“broken”), it does rely on generalizations. Generally speaking, a child can see that when a word has only one a in it, it makes the short a sound. In general, in a word that has an a and silent e, the a makes the long sound. \nBy asking your child to answer this question, you are helping him to make some generalizations about how word patterns work. And, she can use these same generalizations for other words in his reading and writing! \nNote: The oddballs in this sort are not truly “rule breakers”. They follow other “rules” of the English language! \nBOB Books: Set 5, Book 1 ( The Game) \nCreated [by Becky @](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[ ](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com)[www.thisreadingmama.com](by Becky @ www.thisreadingmama.com) \n©2014 All Rights Reserved. \nShort a/Long a Word Sort \nDirections: Cut apart the short a and long a bats and use as headers.
