Most people say they love the sound of rain, that it’s soothing, but not me. It makes me anxious. And it’s really coming down tonight, so I climb out of bed and head for the kitchen.  \nA few minutes later, armed with a mug of hot chocolate and the TV remote, I cozy up on the couch to wait out the storm. I’m a little disappointed my boyfriend didn’t come over—his text said he had to work late. He’s been doing that a lot lately.  \nIf he was here, I wouldn’t have any trouble staying asleep, curled up in his protective embrace. I really wish he’d take me up on my offer to move in. It seems silly that after two years we’re still paying for separate apartments. But I know he likes his space, even if it means I don’t have anyone to snuggle up with during a storm.  \nThen a lightbulb goes off in my head.  \nMaybe my anxiety is more about being alone than the storm itself. That’s the trigger. And I know exactly when this all started.  \nTwenty-three years ago. Right after my mom went missing.  \nThat fall I spent a lot of time staring out the window in my bedroom, hoping I might see my mom and that all I’d have to do was run outside and get her. Completely foolish logic, but I was only five years old after all.  \nOne particular night, I could swear it was her there, down by the water. But after pressing my face to the glass to get a better look, I realized it wasn’t my mom. It was the Lady in White. All the kids on the island talked about her. Some said she was kind and beautiful and granted wishes. Others said she was evil and one look in her eyes would kill you.  \nBut death was a risk I had to take, if it meant getting my mom back.  \n“Jujubee, stay here, I’m going to go ask the lady if she can bring back my mommy,” I said to my fluffy kitten.  \nIt’s so strange, thinking back on that night. It’s more like trying torecount a dream than a memory. There’s a realness and strangeness all wrapped up together. I was in my bedroom. I know that much as a fact. Then, I was in the Everglades. I know that much, too. The middle part? I don’t know. Dad said he followed my footprints all the way off the fourmile-long causeway. So I guess I just walked away.  \nI know I was hiding in the twisted roots of a mangrove tree and I had this intense, heart-pounding fear that I’d never see either of my parents again. That’s when water started rising as the tide came in and I knew I had to get to higher ground. I managed to get myself out of the tree roots so I could swim up one of the small canals, following the tide waters.  \n“Cammie! Cammie St. Rose!
