Every breath tastes like smoke, sharp and bitter, like it’s still clinging to my lungs. I can feel the ﬁre behind me, even though I don’t dare look back. The heat and the crackling wood is all in my head now, burned into my memory like so many other dreadful events.  \n“I did it,” I whisper, my voice raw like I swallowed glass.“I ﬁnally did it.”  \nThe words sound hollow, like they don’t belong to me. My hands are shaking, tucked deep into my sleeves to keep them warm. The air is frigid, biting at my face and burning my throat with every inhale, but it doesn’t faze me. I don’t feel much of anything except the weight of fear and guilt pressing down on my chest, threatening to crush me.  \nThen I hear it. A car.  \nThe low rumble of an engine makes my whole body lock up. Istop dead in my tracks, my eyes darting to the headlights cutting through the dark. My stomach ﬂips, and my legs scream at me to run, but where? It’s just trees and this empty road. Nowhere to hide.  \nThe car slows as it gets closer, and my heart starts pounding so loud I swear the driver can hear it. It’s a police cruiser. The brakes squeal softly as it stops a few feet away, the headlights ﬂooding over me, making me squint.  \nA tall, broad cop steps out, his hand resting on his belt. He’s got the kind of face that looks tired but not unkind. His eyes are sharp,  \nthough, scanning me like I’m some puzzle he’s trying to piece together.  \n“Miss, you alright?” he asks, his voice calm but ﬁrm.  \nMy throat feels like it’s closing up, but I force myself to speak.“I…I need help.”  \nHis eyes ﬂick behind me, and his whole body goes tight. He’s staring at the glow of the ﬁre through the trees, his hand moving instinctively to his radio.  \n“That ﬁre back there—” he starts, but doesn’t ﬁnish. Instead, he speaks into the radio clipped to his shoulder.“Base, this is Unit 47. Got a structure ﬁre about half a mile off Route 16. Looks like it’s fully involved. Send the ﬁre department and backup.”  \nMy stomach twists, but I keep my face blank. Don’t blink. Don’t move. Don’t give him anything to work with.  \n“You coming from there?” he asks, his tone sharper now, his eyes cutting back to me.  \nI nod slowly, swallowing hard.“Yeah.”  \n“What happened?” His voice softens again, like he’s trying to coax the truth out of me.  \nI bite the inside of my cheek, tasting copper.“It was an accident,”I say, my words stumbling out fast.  \nHe glances down at my clothes, his eyes lingering on the dirt and soot smeared across my skin. His tone changes—gentler, but more pointed.“Is there anyone else in the house?”  \nMy stomach drops. The words stick in my throat, and for a second, I can’t breathe.
