Picture a cat with a glossy coat the color of midnight, eyes glowing gold or green, padding silently along a fence at dusk. To one person, that shadow-colored creature spelled trouble; to another, it promised good fortune. How cana single small pet carry two opposite reputations at the same time? The answer is atangled tale of folklore, history, and a little bit of biology.
That tangle of beliefs began, in part, in the towns of medieval Europe, where a black
cat's midnight coat made people uneasy. During the witch trials of the 1400s through the 1600s, some people told a story that witches could disguise themselves as cats, or that a cat was a witch's secret helper. Because these tales spread by word of mouth, they grew stranger with every retelling, and a harmless pet became a symbol of bad luck. Long before that, though, cats had been honored, not feared. In ancient Egypt, cats were so respected that a goddess named Bastet was often shown with a cat's head.
Cross the English Channel, and that same unlucky cat suddenly changes its fortune completely. In much of Britain, a black cat crossing your path has long been considered a sign of good luck rather than a warning. In parts of Japan, people have kept the maneki-neko, the beckoning cat figurine you may have seen waving in a shop window, as a symbol of welcome and prosperity. Sailors also prized black cats, partly because the cats hunted the rats that chewed ropes and food supplies aboard wooden ships. A single custom, it turns out, could mean disaster in one town and a blessing one country over.
Behind all that mystery about the color itself, there is a plain scientific answer with no magic in it at all. A cat's coat is black because of a pigment called melanin, the same substance that colors your own hair and skin. When a cat inherits genes that produce a lot of one type of melanin, its fur turns solid black instead of striped or spotted. Step into bright sunlight, and you might spot faint stripes hidden under that inky coat, a ghost of the tabby pattern underneath. So the eerie color that started so many legends is really just chemistry doing its ordinary work.
That ordinary chemistry produces some far-from-ordinary cats, including a whole breed
built to look like a shadow. The Bombay cat was developed in the United States in the 1950s to resemble a tiny black panther, complete with copper-colored eyes and a sleek, muscular body. Yet you do not need a special breed to own a black cat, because more than twenty ordinary breeds can produce them. Their reputation has even earned them a day of their own, since Black Cat Appreciation Day is marked each August 17th. Shelters use days like that to encourage people to adopt cats that are sometimes overlooked simply for their color.
Overlooked is exactly the word, because those same cats are among the most loving pets a family can find. A black cat purring in your lap does not know a single one of the old legends told about it. It only knows the warmth of your hands and the sound of a can opener at dinnertime. Around Halloween, you will see
black cats on decorations everywhere, arching their backs beside jack-o'-lanterns. The next time one of those cardboard cats stares back at you, remember that the real animal is neither lucky nor unlucky, just a creature waiting for someone to notice it.
Black Cats and Superstition
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) Which statement best captures two central ideas developed across the passage?
A.
