The author explains research as akin to detective work: tracking every clue, verifying recollections, and reading extensively across sources. \nBiographers Search,Research, and Perspire,Author Says \non both sides of the Atlantic.Thenthe author must spend many hours inpainstaking and careful research. \nBy Vincent Holden,C.S.P. \nLike success the art of writing is90 per cent perspiration and 10 percent inspiration.I am inclined to be-lieve that this dictum applies to alltypes of writing;I know it does tobiography. This is particularly truewhen the subject of the biography isa man or woman who has traveledextensively or has exercised influence \nResearch.That word so often con-notes drudgery, plowing throughdusty archives, and poring over oldand faded manuscripts.Well, there isno denying that such activity is allpart of the task of collecting material. But research has another aspect to itthat is not so dull and dreary.I found \nRichard Cardinal Cushing accepts an autographed copy of\"The Yankee Paul:lsaacThomas Hecker\"from the author,Vincent Holden,C.S.P.,during an autograph partyat the Paulist Information Center in Boston.Hecker's Boston friends included the fieryreformer Orestes A.Brownson, and Bishop Fitzpatrick, both instrumental in bringinghim into the Church. \n1959 \nit also to be both fascinating andchallenging.Fascinating because ofthe great avenues of thought it opensto the inquiring mind. \nYou are often transported back ahundred years or more and begin tolive in the times of the people whoseletters you read. You begin to thinktheir thoughts,to share their emo-tions and almost to lead their lives. You are amazed to find at times littleinsights into character that reveal anew and totally different person thanyou expected. These discoveries stimu-late your interest and carry youthrough what otherwise might be amonotonous task of going over count-less letters and statements. \nHe's a Detective \nResearch is especially challenging. It is not too far removed from realdetective work. You watch and studyyour sources for every possible cluethat might lead to new and interest-ing discoveries. You soon find thatyou cannot overlook the smallest leadthat might show the subject of yourbiography in an entirely differentlight. \nWhen I first began the study ofFather Hecker's life,I knew only thestandard Elliott biography, the onlystudy of the Paulist founder that hadyet appeared. This pictured him as amost usual youth who at the age ofeleven was haranguing voters threeand four times his age about thesocial problem. This account wasbased partly on an article that FatherHecker had written and partly on thefertile imagination of his first biog-rapher.But a closer reading of thearticle mentioned a newspaper thatepitomized the principles of the po-litical party which Father Hecker hadjoined. Then a search for that paperculminated in the discovery that theparty only came into existence whenFather Hecker was sixteen and conse- \nEvery biographer, indeed every his-torian,should be on his guard whenconsidering recollections that aremade some time after the events theyrelate.I know in my own case,Ihave hesitated to accept such recol-lections unless they can be checkedby contemporary evidence. And it ishere that the work of the research“sleuth”comes into play. \nHe will search assiduously everymanuscript source that comes to hisattention and read every documentbearing even remotely on his sub-ject.This is work that only the personwriting the biography can do. \nReads Reams \nIt is all very well to talk of re-search assistants, but it seems to methat their activity is pretty welllimited. They do not know the ma-terial as well as the author and whatmight be to them a meaningless re-mark could have profound significanceto one who is familiar with everyaspect of his subject. \nHe is the one who must read reamsof correspondence and note everyreference that in any way bears onthe times or activity of the man heis writing about. For this reason,Ihave always inclined to the customof having documents photostated, rather than taking notes.Because ofthe physical energy entailed and thehazard of the ever pres","cbCaiub8eyxhM4Ay","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiub8eyxhM4Ay","pdf",2179501,16,"English","# Biographers Search, Research, and
