Please delete these notes before printing  \nBiochar  \nA special form of charcoal  \nIntroduction  \nThe Shell Book “How to Turn Woody Waste into Charcoal Briquettes” describes how to make use of waste products such as groundnut or coconut shells, and dried leaves, by burning them in a metal container and partly excluding air to produce charcoal.  \nBiochar however is a special form of charcoal which uses  \nsimilar materials —wood chips, twigs, dry garden waste, etc.  \n— but requires an even higher temperature (600-800ºC), and even more effective exclusion of air, to make the finished product. In order to reach that higher temperature, and to exclude as much air as possible, you will need not just a single steel drum as used to make the briquettes, but a purpose-built two-part biochar kiln, with both parts also made of steel (see illustration of a typical kiln on page 5) .  \nAs well as the kiln, and a sufficient quantity of the woody biomass you plan to burn, you will need a pair of fire-proof gloves to protect your hands when you touch the hot metal, and a large bucket of water to douse the fire when it has burned long enough.  \nThe higher temperature that you will achieve with a specialised biochar kiln has two important effects:  \n· it reduces the amount of energy wasted as smoke, and  \n· it produces a crystalline structure which makes the finished product more porous than charcoal, enabling it to absorb and also retain water more easily.
