This time, we've taken up something that is on everyone's mind: Artificial intelligence (AI) . Whether in the form of large language models likes ChatGPT or image generators like DALL E, AI technology has infiltrated so many watercooler conversations, daily life, and professional space and has inspired excitement and celebration as much as widespread panic. Seeing that writers are the \"unacknowledged legislators of the world,\" we wanted to see what they thought about the technological and the cultural response to it. We made a call, which was enthusiastically received and here we are with this anthology, Binary Bisecting, which showcases a diverse collection of pieces in poetry, fiction, and essays authored by talented writers hailing from Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, and Sierra Leone.  \nTo be clear, this collection, as far as we know, is written by human writers exploring themes of AI. And again, as far as we know, the pieces here have not been generated by ChatGPT. The fact that we have to make such a disclaimer speaks to the blurring of lines between human and machine that, in the past, used to so easily be delineated in the creative space.  \nWith something as cofounding as AI, it always helps to go back to the basics: what is AI? How does it affect our day-to-day life, our children, and our jobs? Should we be putting this much effort into understanding it and discussing it? As the title Binary Bisecting suggests, we want to take the conversation around AI beyond the polarizing and reductive binaries that define much of the conversation in public spaces. Going beyond binaries also means ensuring that we make space for a multiplicity of voices. The collection, which features African writers, represents our intention to analyse, question, and discuss the world of AI using our community’s language of literature, politics, history, mythology, and imagination to showcase the fears, loves, and hesitancies that define the issues.  \nThis collection was an absolute joy to curate! We received quite a number of submissions, but the selection process was even harder than previous calls as every writer contributed strong meaningful pieces showcasing their diverse perspectives on the issue of AI technology. Three distinct perspectives stood out to me: the tentative, the debater, and the sceptic. The tentative is the group that does not immediately shun nor accept the invention and evolution of AI. Instead, they approach the concept with hesitation and curiosity.
