This list provides a scaffold for further language acquisition. \nThe Bilingual Dictionary for ESL Beginners takes into consideration the Australian culture and way of life including frequently encountered colloquial words and phrases. It is expected that students will use this publication as a reference point for the first 12 to 18 months of English language acquisition. \nA companion volume titled Thematic Picture Dictionary for ESL Beginners may be used in conjunction with this volume. It contains over 400 illustrated words, all of which can be found with their translations in this volume. \nThe two dictionaries are designed for individual student use at school and at home to support English language acquisition. \nThe skills of many ESL teachers were utilised in the choice of lexicon for this dictionary. Their enthusiastic participation has helped to produce a valuable teaching and learning resource suited to the needs of beginner ESL students. \nHow to use this dictionary \nNotes for the teacher \nThe information in this dictionary is presented simply showing part of speech, headword in bold, definition if required and phrases for words which need to be read in context for clarity of meaning. You will find explanations regarding the organisation of the dictionary below. \nPage Header \nThe page header is found at the top left of each page in bold for easy identification of the page contents.
