existence.Notonly do all things change by their very nature, butthe very fortunate part of being born as a humanbeing is that we can choose to change. No matterwhat kind of behavior we have manifested in thepast,we are not bound by any force to continue thatbehavior now or in the future. We have completeand total free will. Most of the time we choose to bedominated by old habits of greed, anger and delu-sion.These habits have created suffering which wenow experience, but we can always choose tochange these habits.Everyone has an intuitive senseof the Eternal;we instinctively know what is\"right\"to do,even though it may be difficult to doit. When we do things that cause harm to ourselvesor others, when we refuse to change or persist inold, unsatisfactory habits, this creates suffering.Ashuman beings we can experience suffering, but we \ncan also know enlightenment,or experience the di-rect knowledge of the Unborn, the Undying,i.e.,That Which is Eternal. \nThe story told in Beyond the Pale of Vengeanceshows how a man can commit the great crimes ofmurder and robbery and yet is able to completelyturn his life around, and know the greatest fulfill-ment:the direct experience of the Eternal, theBuddha Nature, and then to completely commit hislife to selfless service thereafter.Having causedharm to others, not to mention the damage done tohimself,he can still find a way to be of service toothers and in the process \"clean up\"the karmicconsequences created by the former actions.InBuddhist teaching, karma is the law of cause andeffect on a moral and spiritual realm. We createkarma by the choices we make in our thoughts, words and actions. When those choices are moti-vated by greed,anger,fear,impatience,pride,jeal-ousy,etc.,the consequences are experienced in theform of suffering.Suffering is not primarily experi-enced as physical pain,it is more likely to be mani-fested in wanting things to be
