The strategy of the mechanics kept me thinking creatively and trying out fun combinations. That excitement is what led me to enthusiastically join the Miskatonic Repository’s program, where I had the chance to write a sequel to the Call of Cthulhu starter adventure, Edge of Darkness as part of the drivethrurpg “The Story Continues” project. \nAs one of my favorite TTRPGs, Call of Cthulhu has always inspired me, and Edge of Darkness is a fantastic introduction for new groups. With my sequel, Beyond the Edge of Darkness, I wanted to expand the story by exploring the Egyptian elements set up in the first and deepening the presence of an antagonistic cult that Keepers can use in clever and devious ways. \nI’m proud of the investigation in this adventure, and I hope it brings you and your group many hours of excitement and fun, capturing all the things that make TTRPGs so magical for new and experienced players alike. \nRespectfully yours, Matthew RTansek \nSome Unsolicited Advice \nPoints of Interest \nIn scenario design, it is beneficial to avoid restricting players to specific skill checks and burying important leads behind them. Instead, discoveries should be approached with flexibility, allowing Keepers to adapt the situation to the players' abilities and the unique circumstances of their game. \nFor example, rather than requiring a swim check to retrieve a submerged lockbox containing important items, the scenario should present it as a point of interest. Keepers can then encourage players to think creatively, utilizing their various skills such as using a weighted rope, navigating a boat, or employing the help of a trained seal. This method fosters a more dynamic and personalized gameplay experience, where players are empowered to solve challenges using their ingenuity. \nPresenting the Unnnamable \nWhen narrating the unnameable in Call of Cthulhu, less is more. Instead of trying to describe the indescribable, focus on the characters' visceral reactions—panic, confusion, or even paralysis in the face of something they can't comprehend. Let your players' imaginations fill in the gaps by giving them just enough to unsettle them: a strange sound, a shape that feels wrong, or a sense of dread that they can't shake. The key is to keep things vague and let the horror of the unknown take over. Trust that what players conjure in their minds will always be far more terrifying than anything you could explicitly describe. \nINTRODUCTION \nOverview \neyond the Edge of Darkness is a Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition investigation designed for three to five players and the Keeper of Arcane Lore.
