We get it. But whether you’re new to Betrayal at House on the Hill or you’ve played before and consider yourself a pro, we strongly encourage you to read through this rulebook before you play this edition. \nThese rules will teach first-timers how to play the game, but they will also highlight rule changes for veteran players. So, before you fearlessly enter our creepy old house and begin exploring, spend some time in the pages that follow. \nRulebook Structure \nThis rulebook is organized in five broad sections: \n1. Preliminaries \n2. Game components and setup \n3. How to Play – Before the Haunt \n4. How to Play – After the Haunt Begins \n5. Reference \nIt’s the house of your nightmares \nThe House on the Hill still sits abandoned, its windows staring blankly out at the world. No one can remember who lived there, or what happened to them. Now, a fearless group of explorers has been drawn to the house, for different reasons. Some received mysterious invitations, while others are investigating unexplained disappearances. A few have simply come to check out a cheap fixer-upper. Playing as those explorers, you will be challenged to face the horrors of the house. Circumstances will place you in any of 50 chilling haunts that will terrify even the strongest among you. But beware, for one explorer will betray the others, leading to a life-and-death struggle for survival. The house will see and hear it all. \nThey say that the House on the Hill always wins. It’s up toyou to prove them wrong. \nObject of the Game \n• Before the haunt begins, explore the house and strengthen your explorer. \n• After the haunt begins, be the first to meet your side’s victory conditions—either asa hero, or as the traitor. \nRulebook Contents \nPRELIMINARIES \nHow to Use this Rulebook 3 \nIf You’re New to Betrayal 4 \nSymbols Used 4 \nIf You’ve Played Before: Important Changes 5 \nGAME COMPONENTS AND SETUP \nWhat’s In the Box? 6 \nGame Setup 7 \nComponent Overview 8 \nCards 8 \nRoom Tiles 8 \nTokens 8 \nCharacter Boards and Figures 8 \nGaining, Losing, and Healing Traits 9 Critical Traits 9 \nCharacter Death 9 \nHow Damage Affects Your Traits 9 \nDice 10 \nTrait Rolls 10 \nAttack Rolls 10 \nHaunt Rolls 10 \nOther Rolls 10 \nPLAYING BEFORE THE HAUNT \nHow to Play– Before the Haunt 11 \nOn Your Turn 11 \nMovement 11 \nAdjacency 11 \nForced Movement 11 \nDiscovering New Room Tiles 12 \nEnding Your Turn 13 \nOther Things to Do On Your Turn 13 \nTrading 13 \nSpecial Actions 13 \nPLAYING AFTER THE HAUNT BEGINS \nHow to Play–After the Haunt Begins 14 \nTypes of Haunts 14 \nNo Traitor 14 \nOne Traitor 14 \nHidden Traitor 14 \nFree-for-All 14 \nStarting the Haunt 14 \nAttacking 15 \nWeapons 15 \nLine of Sight 15 \nLooting Bodies 15 \nObstacles 15 \nAnatomy of a Haunt 16 \nPlaying the Haunt 18 \nMore to Know About Haunts 18 Breaking Ties to Select the Traitor 18 Variable Player Count 18 \nThe Number Track 18 \nFinding Specific Tiles 18 \nBeing the Traitor 18 \nReluctant Traitors 18 \nThe Traitor ’s Special Powers 18 Controlling Monsters 19 \nDying 19 \nEnd of the Game 19 \nREFERENCE \nCharacter Descriptions 20 \nIndex 22 \nLooking for something and not finding it?
