The](at chat.openai.com. The) story we made in ‘Blue whale story’ forms the basis of my book, Benny the Blue Whale, which takes only one throughline of the material we generated, and a cutdown version at that. What you’ll see in this transcript is everything: every wrong turning, every dead end, every last ‘fork’ and ‘re-fork’ of the action I inserted in order to engineer a coherent narrative throughline, every last ounce of plot, subplot and digression we came up with along the way.
What this transcript doesn’t contain is the book I wrote around the story, which is my attempt to make sense of the whole experience; to talk about the process of creative writing at large, and the process of working with ChatGPT in particular; and to show you exactly how and why I made the choices I made and what the heck I thought I was up to, getting involved with this absolute haven’t-even-got-the-word-for-it-it’s-so-insane thing of a machine in the first place. The book adds another layer or two or three or twenty to the whole meta-ness ofit all, and I’d highly recommend you check it out; but then I would, wouldn’t I.
Back to the story itself: the version of‘Benny’ featured in the final book is about 45,000 words long. That was cut down from the ‘Blue whale story’ throughline (only the forks that count), which runs to around 88,000 words. In its entirety (every last fork),‘Blue whale story’ weighs in at a leviathan 125,000 words, and that’s what you’re getting here. The full monty, pure and uncut, too hot for TV, larger than life and three times as ugly version of the yarn… Lampreys and jellyfish, buoys and gulls, take a deep breath and prepare for a wild ride as I present to you the big one: Benny the Blue Whale: The Whole Schmear.
BORING STUFF:
In the following transcript, my prompts to ChatGPT
→ look like this
and ChatGPT’s responses look like this.
Sometimes I use chat.openai’s ‘edit’ icon to rewrite my own prompt multiple times. Alternative prompts are presented like this:
< 1/3> →
< 2/3 > →
< 3/3 > → etc.
Sometimes I hit the ‘regenerate response’ icon, asking ChatGPT for a do-over because I don’t like its first attempt. ChatGPT’s alternative efforts are presented like this:
1/3
2/3
3/3
etc.
Wherever a prompt isn’t a part of the main narrative throughline, I’ve put it in asterisks, thus:
* → This prompt isn’t part ofthe main narrative throughline*
And you can take it as read that the accompanying ChatGPT response isn’t either.
What else? Sometimes a prompt or response will stop in mid-sentence; sometimes there may be no response at all. This will typicically be because the bot suffered a minor crash; or because I hit ‘regenerate response’ before it had finished generating the current one; or something equally trivial.
Misspellings and grammatical errors and the like abound, mostly on my side. None of that stuff’s been tidied up, edited out or screwed with in any way.
FUN STUFF:
In Benny the Blue Whale, I seek to present the narrative as a‘Pompidou Centre’ of a story, with all the workings exposed. I talk about all sorts of stuff in the book, and one of the things I discuss is editing. Here on the net I have the luxury of showing you the raw material from which I began to edit, and hopefully this will be of some interest to those readers who are particularly curious about this part of the process.
I’ve two additional reasons to want to show this stuff to you. Firstly, I wish to illustrate the full extent of the mental contortions ChatGPT put me through, and all the logical/ illogical thickets and exhausting madness we got into, I and my extraordinary co-author, as we battled valiantly/violently together/ against each other to bring this baby home. Secondly, I had to c","cbCaimOrmkPHf0HC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimOrmkPHf0HC","pdf",967517,444,"English","# About the transcript
## What is included and what is omitted
## Transcript formatting and workflow notes
# Why show the raw material
## Demonstrating mental contortions and outcomes
## Cutting fun parts and offcuts
# Story presentation and discussion of editing
## Exposed workings of the narrative","[{"question":"What is the purpose of this transcript in relation to “Benny the Blue Whale”?","answer":"It provides the complete “Blue whale story” conversation that became the basis for the author’s book, retaining every wrong turning and narrative fork used to build a coherent throughline."},{"question":"How does the transcript differ from the final book version?","answer":"The transcript omits the additional book layer where the author explains the creative-writing process and the specific choices made, while also preserving the full raw set of narrative branches that were later cut down."},{"question":"What formatting conventions does the transcript use for prompts and responses?","answer":"The author shows prompts in a specific arrow-styled format, ChatGPT replies in matching blocks, alternative prompts as fractions (e.g., < 1/3>, < 2/3>), and marks prompts not in the main narrative throughline with asterisks."}]","BENNY THE BLUE WHALE - THE WHOLE SCHMEAR | PDF",1791327776,684]
