Louisiana town, anda bright-eyed puppy named Benji was getting readyto pounce. He crouched in a brick alley behind apizza parlor, nose quivering. An old green dumpsterrained paint chips and rust flakes over his golden fur.A stack of flattened cardboard boxes tied up withtwine lay nearby. \nBenji had played with his brothers in the alleyall day,but now his attention was on more seriousmatters. He was on the hunt for dinner. His black-tipped ears stood up and he cocked his head to oneside as he listened for long, shuffling steps. \nAfter a few minutes, the human Benji had beenwaiting for appeared. He was a gangly teenager, with cropped brown hair spiked with gel and short, scraggly hairs growing out of his chin.He sported \na backward baseball cap and a pair of earphones, and he was dragging a thick black garbage bagbehind him. \nWhen the kid reached the dumpster,he droppedthe trash bag and lifted up the dumpster lid.Bendingdown,he grasped the top of the bag with both handsand heaved it into the dumpster. \nBefore the kid could drop the dumpster lid,Benjimade his move.He leapt out from his hiding place, barking in soft, short yips.He shook his head, hisfloppy ears thumping to and fro.His long brown tailflicked back and forth. \n“Hey,there!”the pizza boy exclaimed.Heremoved his earphones and reached down to petBenji.Just as his hand was about to brush the topof Benji's head,Benji ducked and scurried back.Hebarked playfully. \n“Come back here!”the kid said, laughing. \nBenji drew back, his tail wagging madly. As thekid stepped toward him,he bolted.Ignoring hismother's warning growl to come back,Benji ran outto the sidewalk. As the pizza boy gave chase,Benjiled him around the corner and down the main street. He scampered past shops closing down for the night, and dodged giant metal animals that honked andscreeched as they swerved away from him. \nThey went several streets before the kid stopped.\"Hey,I gotta get back to work,\"he told Benji, panting. \nBenji trotted up and let the kid scratch behindhis ears. When he was done, the kid stood up reluc-tantly and headed back to the pizza parlor.Afterwaiting a few minutes,Benji did the same. \nWhen he reached the alley, his tail wagged hap-pily.Everything had gone exactly as planned.Afterbeing closed for days, the heavy lid to the dumpsterwas finally open.In his eagerness to chase Benji, thepizza boy had forgotten to close it. \nBenji scrambled up the pile of cardboard boxes. At the top,he teetered for a moment before jumpingheadfirst into the open dumpster. \nUsing his tiny claws,he tore into the garbagebags. When he was finally able to make holes bigenough to dig the food out,it was","cbCaiukRJn9evF6S","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiukRJn9evF6S","pdf",3388324,68,"English","# Chapter 1\n## Benji’s hunt for dinner\n##
