science. But perhaps his most remarkableaccomplishment was that he spoke out against racism longbefore civil rights became a large movement in America. \nIn his letter written to Secretary of State Thomas \nJefferson in August 1791,Benjamin attacked the institutionof slavery and dared to call Jefferson a hypocrite.Thiscorrespondence helped establish Benjamin Banneker as avital character on the stage of American history. \nWhen Benjamin was a boy,his grandma Molly taughthim to read and write. She used the Bible—the only bookshe owned—as a text. But Benjamin was most drawn tomathematics. While helping his parents work their tobaccofarm,he practiced arithmetic by counting the steps neededtɔplant and harvest tobacco. \nAlong with mathematics,Benjamin was fascinated bymachinery and how it worked. At the age of twenty-one,Benjamin built a wooden clock by duplicating the gears froma borrowed pocket watch. His handcrafted timepiece was rarein eighteenth century America. Most people back then toldtime by watching the position of the sun in the sky.Benjamin's clock kept perfect time for more than fifty years \nFor much of his adulthood Benjamin lived a quiet, humblelife as a tobacco farmer. But in 1788,when Benjamin wasifty-seven years old,he began to teach himself astronomy. \n5 \nc \nThrough his studies of astronomy,Benjamin learned topredict the weather. He even predicted an eclipse of the sun.An accomplished scientist,Benjamin used his skills to createan almanac—something no black man had ever done before. \nIn January I791,President George Washington andSecretary of State Thomas Jefferson hired Benjamin tohelp survey a new nation's capital, which was later namedWashington,D.C.Benjamin worked alongside Major AndrewEllicott IV,one of the finest surveyors in the United States.Using the stars as his guide,Benjamin helped Ellicott lay thecity's boundaries. \nLike many trailblazers,Benjamin stood up for what hethought was right, and spoke out against what he believed tobe wrong. It took almost Ioo years for slaves to be grantedtheir freedom from the time Benjamin wrote to ThomasJefferson, voicing his views on the injustices of slavery. \nYet Benjamin
