Negative thoughts can lead to negative feelings or behaviors; negative feelings can lead to negative thoughts or behaviors; and negative behaviors can lead to negative thoughts or feelings. The multidirectional nature of cognitions, behaviors and emotions might make a client’s problems seem like a difficult puzzle to solve, but there is an upside. As one gets better, so do the others. \nWhile there is some debate in the field about the efficacy of cognitive interventions for improving emotions and behaviors, the efficacy of behavioral interventions has been firmly established. In order for clients to overcome their problems, they ultimately need to change what they’re doing. \n[Psychwire.com/cbt](Psychwire.com/cbt) 2 \nThere are three key behavioral interventions that therapists can use to help their clients get better. These include behavioral activation, exposure and opposite action. Let’s take a look at them. \nFoundational CBT course \nWatch David Tolin describe the interplay between thoughts, behaviorsand emotions in the human experience. \nBehavioral Activation \nActivity scheduling is a core component of behavioral activation. It is based on helping a client to engage in activities and increase skills that give them a sense of mastery or pleasure. In doing so, clients begin to feel better, change their thinking and create new beliefs about themselves, others and the world around them. This evidencebased intervention was initially developed for the treatment \nof depression. \nMore often than not, depression involves low levels of activity, which in turn reinforces the feelings of depression and the negative, self \n[Psychwire.com/cbt](Psychwire.com/cbt) 3 \nderogatory thoughts that come with it. It’s a vicious cycle but it can be broken. By working with a client to identify, plan and do activities that are likely to bring them a sense of mastery or pleasure, therapists can help them overcome depressed mood, build relationships/social supports and experience positive interactions/social reinforcements. \nBehavioral activation/activity scheduling involves the following steps: \n1 Monitor \nAn Activity Monitoring Form can help clients track the activities they’re doing on a daily or weekly basis to see how these might be contributing to their depression. These might include spending large amounts of time lying in bed, scrolling on their phones, playing video games or watching television. While many of these activities are okay in small amounts, it’s when they’redone for long periods of time in isolation that they can begin to cause problems. \n2 Schedule \nAfter completing the Activity Monitoring form, clients often start to see what might be missing from their lives. This is where the therapist can help them identify activities that bring them a sense of mastery or pleasure. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of activities ( Pleasurable Activities Form) that can be suggested, such as going for a walk, preparing a healthy meal, listening to music, spending an evening with friends, going to the beach, playing/learning an instrument and many more. It may help to ask the client what activities they’ve enjoyed doing in the past, or what someone who they know might enjoy. Once the client and therapist have chosen one or a few activities that best address \n[Psychwire.com/cbt](Psychwire.com/cbt) 4 \nthe client’s particular problems, an Activity Scheduling Form can help them plan when they’ll fit them into their week. This is designed to improve their chances of doing the activity once they’ve left the therapy session. \n3 Reassess \nCheck in with the client each week to see which activities they completed and how they’ve progr","cbCaicl18fvjqB1f","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicl18fvjqB1f","pdf",1969289,12,"English","# CBT Tips and Insights for Mental Health Practitioners\n## Focusing on Behavior\n## Three Key Behavioral Interventions\n### Behavioral Activation\n### Exposure\n### Opposite Action","[{\"question\":\"How does behavioral activation work in practice?\",\"answer\":\"It uses activity scheduling to increase engagement in activities that bring mastery or pleasure.
