ofthe most important cultural and artisticevents of the nineteenth century.Yet its ori-gins have been studied largely from the sci-entific point of view. This carefully rea-soned essay challenges the conventionalnotion that the invention of photographywas fundamentally a technical achieve-ment,without artistic roots.Peter Galassi,Associate Curator in the Department ofPhotography at The Museum of ModernArt,argues that the medium“was not abastard left by science on the doorstep ofart, but a legitimate child of the Westernpictorial tradition.\" \nEver since the Renaissance invention oflinear perspective, artists had consideredvision the sole basis of representation.Butonly gradually did they formulate pictorialstrategies capable of suggesting the imme-diacy and relativity of everyday visual expe-rience;only after centuries of experimentdid they come to value pictures that seem tobe caught by the eye rather than composedby the mind.Galassi argues that photog-raphy was born of this transformation inartistic outlook. \nTo support this argument the author hasassembled forty-four innovative Europeanpaintings and drawings made in the half-century before the invention of photog-raphy was announced in 1839.Theseworks,landscapes by John Constable, \nJ.B.C.Corot,and their contemporaries, show an impressive independence from ear- \nBEFORE PHOTOGRAPHY \n## B E F ○ R EP H
