The editors’ note frames reading as a response to disrupted lives, encouraging readers to linger, pray, and act while “singing America.” A table of contents presents multiple voices across genres, including short fiction, book excerpts, poetry, artwork, memoir, essays, photography, and an editorial back page. The included short story section showcases a fairy-tale-inspired narrative with reimagined roles and a mythic woodland setting.","BayView Literary \nReaching \nSummer 2020 \nVolume 15 \nYour financial donation supports the Bay View Association \nPhotograph by Evelyn Schloff \nEDITORS’ NOTE \nDear friends and neighbors, \nReading over this year’s submissions, we are reminded of the delicate nature of life and the strength of our BayView community. Each one of our lives has been disrupted in some measure. We long for the way things were. And yet, in this propitious moment, we have the opportunity to linger, pray, and act, so that all may, in the words of Langston Hughes,“sing America.” \nThis summer, we discovered an even deeper appreciation of the four pillars of the Chautauqua. We are thankful for the measured and meaningful approach our community has taken to balance the many sides of our individual and collective well being. \nAs always, we are thankful for our contributors. Through various artistic mediums, they have sung beautifully and at times poignantly. \nFor those who made the difficult decision to stay home this summer—including our friend and collaborator Marge Bayes—we are with you in spirit and hope this year’s collection brings some respite. \nLastly, we are thankful for you, wherever, however, and whoever you may be. \nWe will grow stronger, together. \nScott Drinkall \nSue Collins \nMarjorie Andress Bayes \nEvelyn Schloff \nTABLE OF CONTENTS \nMacy McLeod Short Story 3 \nRobert Holmes Book Excerpt 10 \nWilliam (Bill) Ostler Poetry and Artwork 14 \nChristine Wyatt Poetry 17 \nJanet Kreger Poetry 22 \nJack Giguere Artwork 25 \nDana Sparling Memoir 26 \nLarry Washburn Short Stories 27 \nRocky Rosacker Photography 30 \nMary Agria Book Excerpt 32 \nSusan Lyman Artwork 34 \nBeverly Brandt Short Story and Poetry 35 \nTally Bay Smith Poetry 38 \nMarilyn Perrin Artwork 39 \nGerald Faulkner Memoir 40 \nMary Jane Doerr Essay 42 \nHannah Rees Poetry 45 \nErin Schloff Memoir 46 \nDoug Bowden Essay 47 \nThe Back Page \nSHORT STORY \nBy Macy McLeod \n“Petyrand His Wolf” is a short story inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonic tale,“Peter and the Wolf.” It has been one of my favorite classical pieces since I was very young. My take on the fairy tale is set in a fictional world, and while most of the original characters are included, each plays a far different role than in the original story. It is left up to the audience to determine what musical instruments fit these “new” characters, but if one asks the author, Wolf is certainly a cello. \nPetyr and His Wolf \nOnce there was a boy named Petyr. He was no more than twelve years old, and he lived in a cottage with his grandfather on the edge of a beautiful meadow. The meadow was shaped like a half moon, at the center of it stood a single tree and a pond. \nBordering the lush green hills lay the Elswoir Wood. The Elswoir was home to creatures both familiar and unimaginable. Grandfather perpetually told Petyr to never go beyond the garden walls. \n“Evil creatures lurk in the Wood, Petyr. They can gobble you up in a single bite. Some can even trick you out of your own soul.” \nThe boy often slipped through the garden gate to frolic in the meadow with his friend, a wolf. Occasionally, Grandfather caught him sneaking back in, but to Petyr, the freedom was worth the punishment. Wolf was Petyr’s closest friend, in fact, far from the likes ofthe sinister beings Grandfather warned him of. \nOne day not far into summer, Petyr was making his way back to the cottage from a day in the meadow, Wolf at his side. The sleek gray animal padded along, his paws making no sound as they hit the earth. Petyr rested his hand on the soft fur as they walked, and they both silently contemplated the coming season. The cottage drew nearer all the while, its wall growing taller by the step. \nThe pair trekked around to the back wall, where Petyr bid his friend goodbye and scaled the stone, dropping nimbly on the other side. As he crossed the garden, he did his best to imitate the strides of Wolf.
