The story, originally copyrighted in 1996 by SIL PNG, is granted permission for use only within Papua New Guinea. The narrative begins with a meeting of forest birds who have agreed that the paradise bird should have a beautiful, flaming red plume. However, the blue kingfisher, Bayöbeng, is not in agreement. He expresses his sadness and anger to the eagle, questioning why he cannot have the plume. The eagle calmly explains that the paradise bird deserves it due to his hardworking nature and that the plume suits him, advising the kingfisher to be happy for him. Dissatisfied and resolute, Bayöbeng declares he will not live in the trees to hear the paradise bird sing. Instead, he decides to dwell by the river. Still feeling angry, he leaves and flies down to the river. There, he discovers a steep cliff where the earth has eroded. He finds a small hole in the cliff face, which he makes his new home.
