It outlines four primary pillars for enhancing energy efficiency: optimizing energy procurement, reducing consumption through building and system improvements, generating on-site renewable energy, and driving institutional behavior change. Designed as a resource for students undertaking an EPQ research project, the text encourages the development of practical action plans or awareness events. It emphasizes the significant potential for energy savings, citing lighting upgrades—specifically the transition to high-efficiency LED systems—as a primary opportunity for educational institutions to decrease electricity usage by up to 20 percent. The content serves as a foundational roadmap for educational leaders and students to foster sustainability, improve facility management, and contribute to broader climate mitigation efforts through systematic institutional changes.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":20,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/barker-associate-schools-taking-the-lead-on-climate-change-educational-guidance/621962/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/barker-associate-schools-taking-the-lead-on-climate-change-educational-guidance/621962.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Fahsai","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-10-20",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":24},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What are the four main areas for schools to improve energy efficiency?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"The four areas are optimizing energy procurement, reducing consumption, generating renewable energy on-site, and implementing behavior change among building users.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How can students use this information for an EPQ project?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"Students can use this guidance to develop an EPQ research project, creating either an action plan for their school or an event/performance designed to explore and address climate challenges.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"Why is upgrading to LED lighting considered a significant energy improvement for schools?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"Lighting often accounts for over 20% of electricity use in educational buildings, and modern LED lighting is approximately 80% more efficient than traditional incandescent or fluorescent options.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},621962,1792969959,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":19,"category_name":20,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":24,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":8,"language":139,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":140,"faqs":141,"seo_title":142,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":143,"read_time":81,"preview_page_count":4},549768702563,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/avatar/8000c4aa63b76e948b?x-image-process=image/resize,m_fixed,w_180,h_180&k=1786536092046926083","Barker Associate \nSchools taking the lead on Climate Change \nReducing emissions is a significant challenge and education, as a large energy user has a key role to play in this. We can take action on climate change and make our buildings more efficient across four main areas. Consider each of these in turn and think about what your school or college could do to implement them; discuss with your tutor how to create an EPQ research project to make a difference to your school. This could be developed as an EPQ artefact, in the form of an action plan for your school, or an EPQ performance, in the form of an event designed to explore this challenge with a specific audience. \n• Buying energy: how does your organisation buy its energy? Is it from renewable sources. Do you understand your consumption patterns and why is it important to know this? \n• Use less: what can you do to use less energy in your school or college? Think about the building fabric itself but also the heating and electrical systems within. \n• Generate your own: what are the opportunities for generating your own renewable energy on-site? \n• Behaviour change: how can your behaviours affect energy consumption and sustainability? What can you do to become more efficient and reduce waste as building users? \nCase study example: \nLighting is the largest single component of electricity use within an education site, making up over 20% of the total. Modern LED lighting is around 80% more efficient than incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. \n[https://www.barker-associates.co.uk/sustainability/](https://www.barker-associates.co.uk/sustainability/) \n[https://www.barker-associates.co.uk/energy-sustainability/](https://www.barker-associates.co.uk/energy-sustainability/)","cbCaitt0uhmoupSq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitt0uhmoupSq","pdf",84231,"English","# Climate Change Action Areas\n## Strategy Implementation\n## Energy Consumption Case Study","[{\"question\":\"What are the four main areas for schools to improve energy efficiency?\",\"answer\":\"The four areas are optimizing energy procurement, reducing consumption, generating renewable energy on-site, and implementing behavior change among building users.\"},{\"question\":\"How can students use this information for an EPQ project?\",\"answer\":\"Students can use this guidance to develop an EPQ research project, creating either an action plan for their school or an event/performance designed to explore and address climate challenges.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is upgrading to LED lighting considered a significant energy improvement for schools?\",\"answer\":\"Lighting often accounts for over 20% of electricity use in educational buildings, and modern LED lighting is approximately 80% more efficient than traditional incandescent or fluorescent options.\"}]","Barker Associate - Schools Taking the Lead on Climate Change - Educational Guidance | PDF",1792466105]
