On a daily basis, our younger students are seen practicing new words in the hallway. In addition to preparing for \nOhio Achievement Assessments, our older students serve in many citizenship \nactivities such as raising our flag, helping in the office during recess and at \nthe end of the day. \nOur school is blessed with so many supportive families. Even in our difficult economic times, we are receiving an impressive outpouring of donations for families in need. \nWe are fortunate to hold events in which families attend in large numbers. Our PTA holds many events that bring our families together as well as supporting teachers by \nraising and providing funds for instructional supplies. \nCommunity members volunteer to read with our students, and many of our parents participate in youth activities outside of school. Girl/Boy Scout leaders and team coaches help us in our effort to prepare our students for life \n--Kim Buehler \nSECOND & FOURTH GRADE TESTING \nMr. James Ryan, Barberton City Schools’ Gifted Coordinator has scheduled testing for our 2nd and 4th graders. Students will take the CogATand IOWA tests during the week of January 23rd. Teachers will provide specific testing schedules in their classroom newsletters closer to testing time. \nMr. Ryan has provided the following explanation of each test: \nCogAT: The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) measures students’learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most linked to academic suc- \ncess in school: verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. The primary goal is to assess students’ reasoning abilities. \nWhile CogAT is well-suited to help educators make important student placement decisions, such as selecting students for Gifted and Talented programs, exclusive features such as the Ability Profile Score can be used to expand the educational opportunities of all students. \nIOWA: Leveraging over 80 years of research, the Iowa Tests offer educators a diagnostic look at how their students are \nprogressing in key academic areas, and offers diagnostic data that can be used to create intervention groups and to drive curricular decisions. \nStudents will be tested in reading comprehension, vocabulary, math (4th graders will take additional tests for both science and social studies) . \nTests are sent out of District to be scored, and results are shared with parents. \nW O O D F O R D E L E M E N T A R Y \nW O O D F O R D \nE L E M E N T A R Y \nS C H O O L \n315 E.
