his back is areject from the sweatshops ofThailand where a seamstress hadgot her names and clubs muddledup,and the shirt had joined otherrejected items on a shipment toAfrica's poorest countries.Itseems that even when these tradi-tional hunters and gatherers arelured by Western paraphernalia,they get foisted off with second-best,  \nA roar comes from the single-track road and a lorry with fivehuge tree trunks laid out on its50-foot trailer sweeps past,scat-tering children and dogs.It lifts acloud of brown dust that eventu-ally settles on the existing film ofdirt that covers are ruining our life,'he says.  \nFor southeast Cameroon's150,000 Baka pygmies,the last 15years have been devastating.When,in the mid-1980s,thecountry underwent a severeeconomic downturn,brought onby a slump in the price of cocoay     3lL             L         L   Land coffee,a cash-strappedgovernment looked for othermeans of earning foreigncurrency.Its virtually unexploitedrainforest tracts provided the  \nOne tree can fetch thousandsof pounds in Europe.While thebulk of the profit poured into thecoffers of government and busi-ness interests,ordinaryCameroonians gained little.Andthe Baka,who know the forestbetter than anyone else,but areat the bottom of the economicladder,were never consulted.Now they are the losers in everyconceivable way.  \nFor centuries they have gath-ered fruit,nuts and honey fromthe forest,caught fish,and killedand eaten indigenous speciessuch as antelope,porcupine,monkey and duiker.Theirs was asymbiotic relationship with theirenvironment,and stocks werereplenished as part of the naturalcycle.  \nThe 19th century evangelisinginvasion had minimal impact onthe Baka.But while Westernmissionaries failed to makeinroads,their fellow Africans,theBantu,did.They moved in fromsurrounding areas,slashed andburned forests and startedfarming.In no way can they bedescribed as prosperous but,compared to the Baka,they livelike kings.  \nThe Bantu operate a marketeconomy and the Baka,despitebeing used to bartering ratherthan currency,were lured,in thehope of prosperity,to the Banturoadside habitations.But thesupposed riches never came theirway.For the privilege of living intheir traditional grass hutscrammed in at the edge ofvillages,the Bantu forced theminto virtual slavery.The Baka-particularly the women-had towork the land,usually withoutpayment.And thousands still livelike that today.  \nSo when,15 years ago,theloggers arrived,the Baka werealready experiencing the down-side of market forces.Since then,  \nit is estimated that Cameroon has lost over90 per cent of its frontier forest,andalmost all of the rest is now under threatfrom European (mostly French)and Asianlogging companies.Just five Europeantimber groups account for half of theproduction and export of Cameroon'stropical timber.  \nFor every tree extracted,at least 20others will be felled and left to lie on theforest floor.The logging companies usebulldozers to reach their prize,flatteningvirtually everything in their path.TheBantu know the forest well too,and it islargely they who direct the companies tothe prized trees.But,in recent
