From learning the Goraia dance with Tripura friends, to joining the Marma Sangrai water rituals and observing priests washing Buddha statues, the story highlights community traditions and shared festivities. The Chakma Biju festival follows with dancing, river flower-bed offerings, and house-to-house curry sharing, ending with reflection on cultural diversity and heritage.","The Baisabi Festival HerStory Foundation \nHumayra Kabir \nMa and I were packing a suitcase. Our family was going on a trip. \n”Asha, did you know we are going to celebrate a very special festival this year?” Ma asked.”But we always celebrate Bengali New Year.” I said.”That isn’t new.” \n”Yes . but Bangladesh is home to many different cultures that have their own \nways of celebrating the new year. In the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where we are going, \nthe indigenous people celebrate with a festival they call Bai-sa-bi.” \n”What does Bai-sa-bi mean, Ma?” I asked.”Baisabi is a name made of three names: \nBaisu, Sangrai, and Biju. \nEach is the name of a new year festival celebrated by an indigenous hill tribe. The Tripura, Marma and Chakma peoples all have their own way of welcoming the new year.” \nWhen we arrived at the Baisu festival, the girls of the Tripura community dressed me in a colorful skirt and shirt. They put flowers in my hair and taught me the steps of the Goraia Dance. \nMy new friends told me that the dance follows the movements made by hillside farmers. We danced and laughed and played until sunset. \nThe next day, we travelled to Rangamati for the Marma Sangrai festival. \nIt was the perfect way to spend the hot dayplaying water tag and splashing around in the pools. \nWe watched the priests carrying Buddha statues to the water to wash them. \nThen, we enjoyed a wrestling match in the evening. \n6 \nOur last stop was the Biju festival of the Chakma people. \nWe danced and made floating flower beds to sail on the river. \nWe spent a long time swimming and washing ourselves for the new year. \nIn the evening, we went from house to house, sharing curry made of 32 ingredients! \nOn the train back to the city, I thought about how lucky I am to live in Bangladesh; a country that welcomes the new year so many times, in so many different ways. \nNote \nBangladesh is home to many indigneous people who live in the north and south of the country. They have unique cultures, languages, and heritage. Bangladeshis have a diverse and rich history.","cbCaisdkG4AnzCO7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisdkG4AnzCO7","pdf",2509174,5,11,"English","en",105,"# Baisabi Festival Introduction\n## Baisu Festival and Goraia Dance\n## Marma Sangrai Festival in Rangamati\n## Biju Festival and New Year Celebrations\n## Reflection on Bangladesh’s Cultural Diversity","[{\"question\":\"What does the narrator do during the Chakma Biju festival?\",\"answer\":\"The group dances, makes floating flower beds to sail on the river, swims and washes for the new year, and shares curry made of 32 ingredients from house to house.\"}]",1783591284,17,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":78,"head_meta":80,"extra_data":82,"updated_unix":27},"baisabi-festival-herstory-foundation","",{"@graph":35,"@context":77},[36,53,68],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,47,50],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":46},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/baisabi-festival-herstory-foundation/51497/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":40,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-18","2026-07-09",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"What does the narrator do during the Chakma Biju festival?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"The group dances, makes floating flower beds to sail on the river, swims and washes for the new year, and shares curry made of 32 ingredients from house to house.","Answer","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":79,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":81,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":84},[85,88,92,96,100,105,110,115,120,123,127],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":86,"slug":87},90,"story-novel",{"id":46,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":89,"show_sort_weight":90,"slug":91},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":93,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":101,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":102,"show_sort_weight":103,"slug":104},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":106,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":107,"show_sort_weight":108,"slug":109},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":111,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":112,"show_sort_weight":113,"slug":114},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":116,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":117,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":119},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":118,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":118,"slug":122},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":126},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":128,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":20,"slug":130},19,"General","general"]
