The truth he’d been dodging for some time paced him like a shadow.  \nHis 1979 F-250 clattered down the sun-bleached two-lane highway that cut through Iron Flats County. The South Dakota road stretched as straight as an arrow through tired shades of yellow and green prairie grass. Fences along the way leaned under the weight of the winds that constantly battered the region.  \nHarlan drummed his fingers on the cracked steering wheel as he chewed at the edge of his lip. Out here, miles of sky made a man feel small, but it did little to empty his mind of worry. The calves had come out thin this season, and the grass on the northern pasture was running out fast. He had water tanks that needed major patching along with an endless list of minor problems he didn’t have time to address.  \nBut what gnawed at him more than busted pumps and dry grass was the way things had been shifting in Iron Flats.
