\nCONTENTS \nV 1 \nBACKGROUND TO THE PLAYPLAYSCRIPT OF FLOUR BABIES \n# BACKGROUNDTO THE PLAY\n\nThe idea for Flour Babies was just about handed to me on aplate. As I came out of Boots the Chemist one day, someonepressed on me a copy of Awake!,the Jehovah’s Witnesses'newsletter. In it,I found an amusing snippet about aCalifornian High School in which the teenage pregnancyrate had shot up so high that,in desperation,a project wasbegun. Each pupil was given a six-pound sack of flour tocare for over three weeks. These 'flour babies'had to be keptdry, clean and safe at all times. If the owner went out, aresponsible babysitter had to be found, and each pupil hadto keep a diary. At the end of the three weeks,a typicalpupil's commentary was:'I was amazed. It didn't scream. It couldn't crawl.I didn't have to feed it,and it didn't messits diapers. And still I couldn't wait to be rid of it.’(Almostneedless to say,the number of teenage pregnancies in thisschool suddenly plummeted.) \nThe book clearly had to be curtailed in a few ways, tomake a play.At an obvious level,I've had to kill off a goodfew of Simon's classmates,so as not to clutter up the stage.Mr Cartright’s sheer cynicism about school projects(whichI'll openly admit I share)comes over more strongly in thenovel. Also, some of the comedy culled from Dena Attar'sdelicious polemic on the teaching of social and domesticsubjects in schools(Wasting Girls'Time,Virago,1990)didn’tmake it from the pages of the novel to the play. But there'senough left to show the differing ways in which the pupilsrespond to the traumas of the experiment. \nA natural question might be:why set the story in a boys'school?I'’m afraid this is a stab at realism.I suspect it's alltoo likely that,in any mixed group, some soft female soul(and it only takes one)would crack and offer to look after allthe flour babies. You might take issue with me on this, and \nI'd be perfectly content to think I was wrong. But that's why, facing my sense of honesty as a writer, and risking criticism,I felt I had to write it this way. \nPart","cbCaiqHCckLfv04R","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqHCckLfv04R","pdf",3481993,100,"English","# Background to the
