The issue also includes editorial guidance from Glenn, aviation news, analysis of Fairey’s Delta 2 development toward an all-weather supersonic interceptor, and a study of the US Navy’s underpowered FH-1 Phantom lineage into the F2H Banshee and its variants.","Veteran Vulcan is back * Fairey Delta 2 \nTRUE DELTA LADIES \nAvro 698 prototypeson test \nSHARK ATTACK! \nP-40sof the Desert War \nADVANCED FIGHTERS \nWestland’s lost fast jet designs \nBEFORE THE LIGHTING \nConvair’s novel VTOL interceptor \nHAIL TO THE THIEF \nWho took the Me 309’s crown? \n2 FREE \nCurtiss P-40B Tomahawk Posters! \nCurtiss P-40B Tomahawk \nCurtiss P 40B Tomahawk \nCurtiss P-40B Tomahawk \nSPECIFICATIONS \n\n| Type: | Single-seat fighter-bomber |\n| --- | --- |\n| Engine: | One Allison V-1710-33 12-cylinder liquid-cooled inline piston engine, 1,040hp |\n| Wingspan: | 37ft 4in (11.38m) |\n| Length: | 31ft 8in (9.66m) |\n| Height: | 12ft 6in (3.76m) |\n| Wing Area: | 235.9sq ft (21.9m2) |\n| Empty Weight: | 5,590lb (2,536kg) |\n| Maximum T/O Weight: | 7,600lb (3,447kg) |\n| Maximum Level Speed: | 352mph (726km/h) |\n| Rate of Climb: | 2,860ft (871m) per minute |\n| Service Ceiling: | 32,400ft (9,876m) |\n| Maximum Range with internal fuel: | 730 miles (1,175km) |\n| Armament: | Two 0.50 calibre Browning machine guns mounted in the cowling; four 0.30 calibre Browning machine guns mounted in the wings. |\n\nU \nntil recent detailed post-war research into the records of Allied squadrons from the Second WorldWar proved \notherwise, the P-40 Tomahawk was regarded as a mediocre design. It was thought to be dangerously inferior to contemporary Axis ghters and only really suitable for close air support. \n􀀞e lack of a two-speed supercharger for its Allison V-1710 engine meant it could not compete with Luftwa􀀝e ghtersat high altitudes at the time. 􀀞at said, the Tomahawk had a range nearly twice that of early Supermarine Spit res and Messerschmitt Bf 109s, which made it suitable for the British Commonwealth squadrons ofthe Desert Air Force in the Middle East and North African campaigns in mid-1941 . \nOne of the rst RAF units to operate the P-40 Tomahawk in combat was 112 Squadron, and they had the distinction of being the rst Allied military aviation unit to feature the ‘shark mouth’, a concept which was inspired by Luftwa􀀝e Bf 110 twin-engine ghters of Zerstörergeschwader 76 early in the war. \nNo 112 Squadron included pilots from Poland, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In late 1941, one of those RAF pilots 􀀜ying Tomahawks Mk IIB (P-40B) with 112 Squadron was Neville Duke, who later became a test pilot and, in 1953, took the World Air Speed Record 􀀜ying a specially modi ed Hawker Hunter over Littlehampton on the South Coast (see News, April, Issue 7) . \n􀀞e name Tomahawk was \nused exclusively by the British Commonwealth and Soviet air forces, applied to the original variants, the P-40, P-40B, and P-40C, which were designated the Curtiss Model 81. Although intended as a pursuit aircraft, the ghter was agile at low and medium altitudes but lacked power at high altitudes, a 􀀜aw that persisted in later models. At medium and high speeds, it was one of the most manoeuvrable early monoplane designs ofthe war, and in the early years could out-turn Luftwa􀀝e ghters over North Africa and the Russian Front. 􀀞is manoeuvrability allowed a number ofaces to emerge early in the con􀀜ict, who went on to achieve greater success with more capable Allied ghters in the following year. ■ \nWelcome \nWelcome to the eleventh issue of Aviation Classics Monthly. \nIt’s a subject I have mentioned in previous issues, but I am genuinely delighted and reassured by the enthusiasm I observe when visiting museum collections and discussing aircraft restorations with the army of volunteers present, who undertake the work in their retirement years or their spare time on weekends. The historic, and in many cases unique, airframes quite often need restoration and perhaps a drop of hydraulic fluid to become presentable. And herein lies a dilemma for museum curators. \nIs it best for this work to take place out of sight and only be unveiled when the project is finished? Or should the restoration work be done where it can be seen by visitors to the museum’s aircraft colle","cbCaieBN7AD1mqj2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieBN7AD1mqj2","pdf",52553615,2,1,92,"English","en",105,"# Cover Feature\n## Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk Specifications\n# News\n# Marginal Performance\n## Fairey Delta 2 -
