Introduction \nDawkins' (2006) recent book The God Delusion suggests that it is not intelligent to believe in the existence of God. In this paper we examine (1) the evidence for this contention, i.e. for whether there is a negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief; (2) whether the negative relation- \n⁎ Corresponding author. \nE-mail [address:](address: Lynnr540@aol.com)[ Lynnr540@aol.com](address: Lynnr540@aol.com) (R. Intelligence and religious belief within nations \nWe are by no means the first to suggest the existence of a negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief within nations. This phenomenon was observed in the 1920s by Howells (1928) and Sinclair (1928), who both reported studies showing negative correlations between intelligence and religious belief among college students of − .27, \n12 R. Lynn et al. / Intelligence 37 (2009) 11–15 \nand − .29 to − .36 (using different measures of religious belief). In the 1950s Argyle (1958) concluded that “intelligent students are much less likely to accept orthodox beliefs, and rather less likely to have pro-religious attitudes”. \nEvidence pointing to a negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief within nations comes from four sources. These are (1) negative correlations between intelligence and religious belief; (2) lower percentages holding religious beliefs among intelligence elites compared with the general population: (3) a decline of re","cbCaidRAD743TM2r","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidRAD743TM2r","pdf",222394,"English","# Introduction\n# Intelligence and religious belief within nations\n## (1) Negative correlations between intelligence and religious belief\n## (2) Lower percentages holding religious beliefs among intelligence elites compared with the general population\n## (3) Decline of religious belief with age among children and adolescents\n## (4) Decline of religious belief during the course of the twentieth century as intelligence has increased\n# Religious belief and psychometric g\n# Intelligence and religious belief between nations\n# Discussion\n# Appendix A\n# References","[{\"question\":\"What relationship does the paper test between intelligence and religious belief?\",\"answer\":\"The paper reviews evidence for a negative relationship between intelligence and religious belief and checks whether it differs by psychometric g or varies across nations.\"},{\"question\":\"How is intelligence linked to religious belief within countries?\",\"answer\":\"It summarizes multiple studies reporting negative correlations, plus evidence such as lower proportions of religious believers among intelligence elites and declining religious belief with age or across the twentieth century.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the key between-nation result reported in the sample of 137 countries?\",\"answer\":\"The correlation between national IQ and disbelief in God is reported as 0.60.\"}]","Average intelligence predicts atheism rates across 137 nations - Research report | PDF",1791052317,13]
