Richard Johnson, Jr. (Cornell University) \nWilliam A. Sethares (University of Wisconsin – Madison) Margaret Holben Ellis (New York University) \nJanuary 2021 \nSubmitted to the Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art \nAbstract \nThe identification of watermarks in historical laid papers and comparison of their subtle differences has occupied scholars for some time. One popular technique is to overlay an image of the watermark in question with its presumed match from a known source. For example, a newly discovered watermark in a Rembrandt print might be compared to one found in Erik Hinterding’s Rembrandt as an Etcher [2006] . This overlay can confirm the pair as identical moldmates or reveal their differences. But, achieving an accurate overlay for two images having different scales, orientations, and resolutions can be problematic using standard image manipulation tools, such as Photoshop. This paper presents a method to create videos that are produced by marking specific points on digital images of both watermarks, regardless of the quality or degree of their “comparability” with regard to scale, orientation, and resolution. Recently developed, user-friendly software then automatically produces an animated overlay for fast and reliable comparison. \nPapermaking, Moldmates, and Twins \nThe European manufacture of paper before the introduction of the papermaking machine, patented in 1801, 1 entailed draining water from suspended pulp scooped from a vat using amold.2 In Rembrandt’s time (1606-1669), the mold, a simple wooden frame, secured a porous screen fabricated from fine, densely-spaced horizontal rows of laid wires held into position by widely-spaced vertical chain wires. When the mold was plunged into the suspended paper pulp and lifted up, the chain and laid wires acted as a sieve. The pulp was retained in thinner and thicker accumulations as the water drained away due to the interference of the laid wires and chain wires. The watermark, formed by stitching a thin wire bent into a simple shape onto the wires of the mold, likewise impeded the rate and quantity of pulp as it drained away, leaving behind a characteristic impression. \nThus, the final sheet of paper displayed thinner, translucent patterns that corresponded to the laid lines, chain lines, and watermark(s) in the wire sieve. Usually, these internal characteristics of paper can be seen easily when the sheet is placed over a light source. \n1John Gamble, British patent 2487, October 20, 1801. \n2C. A. Baker, From the Hand to the Machine, Chapter 3, pp. 34-50, Legacy Press, 2010. \nHowever, with heavily inked prints, more sophisticated imaging techniques, such as beta radiography, are required. \nSince paper was made one sheet at a time, using an alternating pair of molds was the most efficient means of producing a steady output. The vatman submerged one mold into the tub, scooped up some paper pulp, shook it gently for even distribution, and passed the mold to his helper. Having done so, he picked up a second mold, formed a second sheet, and passed it back to his helper, who had already emptied and returned the first mold, thus creating a continuous cycle. \nBeing entirely made by hand, every mold was unique. While at first the two alternating molds might appear identical, there are subtle differences in the details of the watermarks, the intervals between chain wires, and the densities of the laid wires (typically measured in lines per centimeter) . Every sheet of paper formed from a given mold will replicate that mold’s particular physical features; two papers formed on the same mold are called moldmates. Papers made from the alternating pair of molds are called twins.3 \nAfter the sheets of paper were formed, they were subsequently pressed, dried, finished, and packaged together. Not surprisingly, moldmates and their corresponding twins ended up in the final ream","cbCaicCmulpRIJ7m","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicCmulpRIJ7m","pdf",1824115,22,"English","# Automated Overlay Videos for Accurate Watermark Identification and Moldmate Matching\n## Papermaking, Moldmates, and Twins\n## Matching Manufactured Patterns in Art Supports","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the paper address in watermark comparison?\",\"answer\":\"It addresses the difficulty of creating an accurate overlay between two watermark images that differ in scale, orientation, and resolution using standard tools.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the proposed method create reliable overlays?\",\"answer\":\"The method marks specific points on digital images of both watermarks, and then user-friendly software automatically generates an animated overlay for comparison.\"},{\"question\":\"What are moldmates and twins in the paper’s context?\",\"answer\":\"Moldmates are papers formed from the same individual mold, while twins are papers produced from the alternating pair of molds used in pre-machine papermaking.\"}]","Automated Overlay Videos for Accurate Watermark Identification and Moldmate Matching | PDF",55]
