Many of the arguments for running an EV are still financial, which won’t move the needle for luxury buyers. Nor are they likely to accept some of the compromises (range, weight) inherent in current-generation EVs.  \nThat’s why many premium firms have slowed plans to go electric, preferring to focus on proven technology they know customers want. They may also be wary of the less than positive reception for the Ferrari Luce and Jaguar concept. But while the likes of Aston Martin and Lamborghini put their electric ambitions on ice, Bentley will still launch its first EV this year. It has spent heavily developing the Torcal (p4) and can draw on proven tech from its Porsche sibling so it makes sense not to waste that investment. But there’s still plenty of risk. There’s plenty of reward too. Many of the benefits of EV tech – refinement, silent running and power – fit well with luxury  \ncars: look at the Rolls-Royce Spectre. And unlike Ferrari and Jag, Bentley isn’t about radical reinvention. The Torcal is just a new type of car designed to broaden its appeal.  \nMuch like, a decade or so back, the Bentayga. A Bentley SUV was once unthinkable. Now it’s the brand’s best-selling model.
