It outlines foundational PR principles through a promise-driven book model: make a clear, valuable commitment to the reader, then deliver actionable results. The chapter opening emphasizes strengthening authenticity and positions transparency as a lever for transforming business communication and trust.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPreface \nThe Authentic Age \nIt’s 1993. The height of the Clinton presidency, lodged somewhere between the end of the Cold War and the heyday of the Information Age. Mikhail Gorbachev had torn down the wall, but the walls between people remained standing. Silicon Valley was about to go into overdrive, and little did anyone know that someday, after the Millennium, people would become addicted to personal devices that would fit in the palm of your hand yet have more computing power than an Apollo mission. Not yet would people crouch as they walked down the sidewalk, thumbs seemingly doing a jaunty two-step on a keyboard, carrying on a text conversation with someone thousands of miles away while ignoring every passing soul and, perhaps, the “Do Not Walk” icon. “Read my lips” had come and gone, but read my text was not yet en vogue. \nThis was also the year my most successful business book ever was published. Guerrilla PR: Waging an Effective Publicity Campaign Without Growing Broke was, as the title suggested, a handbook on how to wage a successful, big-budget public relations effort without the big budget. To do that in 1993, we followed some cardinal rules: \n We knew the players. The anchors, the reporters, the editors, the writers, the critics; we knew about their interests, their awards, their insecurities, their senses of humor and their dreams. They were the gatekeepers, but we knew how to get through the gate. There’s a very famous bit of dialogue in the movie Broadcast News that epitomizes the volatility of the television industry. I always made it a point to be able to answer the question, to be “in the loop,” so that I became a confidante of many in the media. When they came to recognize that I understood their \nbusiness and their lives, they became more likely to trust me when I came to them with a pitch. \n We practiced journalism. Because of that trust we established, journalists came to rely on us for story ideas. Quite frankly, there were times when we were doing most of their work—originating story ideas, and tracking down sources—but we recognized that journalists were stretched very thin because of the nature of the business. Journalism is, in part, the process of becoming an instant expert one day on something you knew nothing about the previous day. (If you don’t think that’sdifficult, try it at home.) Journalists are harried, distracted, and working on deadline. If an interview doesn’t come through, it’s like the first in a set of dominoes falling. So, we turned our clients’ narratives into saleable stories, we vetted the sources, and we made sure everything came through on time. \n We practiced the “5:30 Rule .” If it was after the end of the business day, and the light on the phone was blinking, we answered it. To ignore it would be to, potentially, miss a column on the front page or a slot on Good Morning America the following day. In public relations, as in the news business, tomorrow never comes. News is perishable; it’s only appealing when it’s fresh. \nGuerrilla PR, though, was more than just a handbook of professional public relations. As the title suggests, the thesis of the book was that you didn’t have to spend a fortune to get the same results as Fortune 500 companies. The title was meant to describe a dominant public relations idea in 1993 about the capacity of people to do for themselves what literally had been done by companies with large budgets. Guerrilla PR was a title meant to describe how you could do the very same thing those companies could do for the cost of a postage stamp. (At the time, email wasn’t commonly used by the general public.) So I wrote the book, and it went on to become the best-selling PR book of all time all over the world, taught in twenty-five of the top business schools in America. It was the right message for that time. The advice in it was keyed to professionals but meant for anyone who wants to be a strong voice amid murmurs.
