that seem likeliest to interest an andiencewhich necessarily does not know as much about his ideas and develop-ment as he knows himself Looking back over twenty years of writingpoetry,it is quite posible to see fanls and weakness that at the timeof writin seemed to be strengths;fakities that seemed to be trudhs;filares that seemed successes.  \nMost dificult ofall,perhaps,is looking with a steady eye at the poemswhich have been kindly received,anthologized and praised;for theseare the very poems the writer has to disown most firmly,ifhe is not toremaim forever at their level,writing the same poem over again,lookingat the world with the same eyes.There is nothing more likey to spoilone's balance than listening too keenly to praise of any kind;the mostignorant blame is better for the today?Very few people now read poetry forpleasure,but some,unfortunately,are forced to read it for the purposeof being examined in their appreciation of it.Poetry,like medicine,isnot often taken for is pleasant taste;it is prescribed.This is enongh tomake it unpopalar at the very outset.  \nWell,he may console himself,sometimes a sympathetic doctor canbe found who will recommend a sea voyage,or a mounzin holiday,  \nor even a glass of wine before dinner.Perhaps,for some readers,hispoetry may turn out to be as enjoyable as any of these things.Thesedays it is about the only hope the poor fellow has.  \nFor perhaps poetry is the least popular of the arts,just now.Forone thing,it has no obvious social advantages.An exhibition of paintingsis a place at which to meet other people and wear one's new hat,aswell as seeing the paintings;a concert is a social occasion as well as amusical one.Then there is the matter of prestige,which can attach toowning valuable paintings or even to knowing a lot about them,and tobeing seen at all the important first nights.But poetry is a very a-socialpleasure,and no prestige attaches to owning a lot of books of poetry(unless they are all first editions and rare copies,and this has nothing todo with the poetry they contain).  \nSince poetry has so small an audicnce,the notion has begun to growup that it is a kind of survival from more primitive times,a
