This guide has been designed to give you some information to make your introduction to Mensa a positive one. We hope you become a long-term and active member. \nWhat is Mensa? \nAs you have recently joined, you probably know a bit about Mensa already. “Mensa”means table in Latin. It suggests a round-table organisation where all members are equal. The only qualification for membership is a score in the top two percent of the general population on a standardised intelligence test. It is an international, not-forprofit organisation. There are members in over 100 countries around the world, the largest being the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. Members living inan area without a national Mensa can apply to be members of Mensa International. \nMensa has three stated purposes: to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity, to encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence, and to promote stimulating intellectual and social opportunities for its members. \nMensa as an organisation has no opinions, but its members certainly do! \nHow did Mensa start? \nMensa was founded in Oxford in 1946 by an eccentric, flamboyant Australian and areserved Englishman. They had met by chance on a train. The Australian was Roland Berrill, a barrister educated in England. The Englishman was Lancelot Ware, at the time a mature student at Oxford, who was later to gain a string of qualifications in science and the law. \nWare is credited with the idea of Mensa, but it was Berrill who \"founded\" the society in the usual sense, on 1 October 1946. Berrill supplied the start-up cash, wrote the idiosyncratic pamphlets and became Mensa's first Secretary. He died a few years later, having recruited in total around 400 people by self-administered IQ tests. \nDr Lancelot Ware dropped out of Mensa for many years but later rejoined and was a member until his death in 2000, with the title \"Fons et Origo\" from his claim that the original idea was his. \nAustralian Mensa background \nIn Australia, the organisation was started by a number of members of British Mensa who had moved to Australia. We date our founding to the appearance of three of those members on the ABC show \"People 1964\", aired in October of that year. \nAs of mid 2020, there are over 2,500 active members registered with Australian Mensa; around two thirds are male. Not all national Mensas admit child members, but Australian Mensa tests anyone ten years and over and also accepts younger children with psychologist administered assessments. Consequently, around one third of the members are under 18. Members can sit for the Mensa supervised test or supply prior evidence of eligibility. \nMembership \nWhat happens now? \nYou will receive a membership card and welcome letter by email and a welcome pack in the mail. This will be sent from our Sydney office. \nAdministration \nEach State has a State Secretary or Statesec. \nYou should hear from your local Statesec soon. Australian Mensa is governed by a National Committee (NatCom). NatCom is comprised of all the Statesecs as well as the members of AdCom, the Administrative Committee of Mensa. AdCom positions are Chairman, Recruiting Officer, Membership Secretary and Treasurer, and the Immediate Past Chair if applicable. NatCom roles are elected positions. \nMensa is a volunteer-driven organisation. None of the office bearers are paid. \nContact information for all officers can be found on the back pages of our magazine \nTableAus. \nThe Mensa website \n[www.mensa.org.au](www.mensa.org.au) \nLog in to the Member Centre to: \n• Update your personal details \n• Select your newsletter and magazine preferences \n• Book for an event \n• Order merchandise \n• Use the mapping tool \n• Check the member resources \n• Check the calendar of events \n• Renew your membership \n• Read the Australian and Internat","cbCaibLe8eUlXUq5","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibLe8eUlXUq5","pdf",224294,"English","# What is Mensa?\n## Membership\n## Administration\n## The Mensa website\n## Newsletters and communication with members\n## Child members\n## Mapping Tool","[{\"question\":\"What are the membership requirements for Mensa?\",\"answer\":\"Membership requires a score in the top two percent of the general population on a standardised intelligence test.
