Glossary 24  \nFOREWORD  \nThe National Department of Education has reworked and adapted the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) to support the teaching and learning in Multi-grade Schools.  \nThe challenges posed by Multi-grade teaching are different to Mono-grade teaching and requires a unique approach to the management of a Multi-grade classroom.  \nThe aim of the Multi-grade Annual Teaching Plan is to ensure that teachers:  \n• have a common understanding of the content and skills focus in the curriculum;  \n• address the minimum prescribed content and assessment tasks specified in CAPS ina grade specific but simple manner  \n• follow a manageable pace of work while addressing the needs of different grades in one classroom.  \nThe adapted annual teaching plans provides guidelines for teaching, learning and assessing in Grades 4-6 in a Multi-grade School. The annual teaching plan sets the pace and sequence of progression in the content and skills in which teaching, learning and assessment should take place.  \nThe National Curriculum Statement (NCS) and Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) Intermediate Phase Grades 4-6 continues to form the foundation on which the Multi-grade curriculum is based.  \nThe Multi-grade curriculum mainly consists of Annual Teaching Plans however certain subjects provide lesson plans with suggested methodology attached.  \nA suggested time allocation per subject is proposed in each subject and the school timetable must be aligned to the adapted curriculum and assessment programme.  \nThe annual teaching plan is divided into four terms. Schools will have to look at the number of weeks in a term and re-work the period allocation to maintain a coherent programme of teaching, learning and assessing in each term.  \nINTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE ARTS  \nIn Creative Arts, learners are exposed to Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. The purpose of this subject is to develop learners as creative, imaginative individuals with an appreciation of the arts. The subject provides opportunities for learners to give expression to their feelings, individually and in collaboration with others. It creates a foundation for balanced creative, cognitive, emotional and social development. It is therefore important to provide learners with a safe and supportive environment to explore, experience and express thoughts, ideas and concepts within an atmosphere of openness and acceptance where learners feel creative and can develop skills and interpret their world in unique and creative ways.  \nCreative Arts is studied in two parallel and complementary streams:  \nVisual Art and  \nPerforming Arts (dance, drama, music) .  \nVISUAL ART  \nVisual Art provides the learner with an opportunity to discover through play, while developing skills and techniques. Visual Art encourages an awareness of art elements and design principles found in the natural and the built environment, and enriches the learner’s personal experience of the world. Opportunities are provided for social, emotional and intellectual development, and through non-verbal expression and the process of creating art, the learner comes to understand symbolic language.
