Present
by Carl Degler
Oxford University Press,$19.95 | the desires of women as individuals (in
a culture which inculcates individual-
ism)and the desires of many of the
same women as mainstays and moral
guides of the family (the sphere in
which that culture placed women as a
group).
In the process of amassing his evi-
dence,Degler provides the general
reader with a wealth of up-to-date in-
formation garnered from primary and
first-rate secondary sources.Since fam-
ily historians tend towards statistics
while women's historians make use of
personal,qualitative data,the book
merges methods as well as material. It
is fascinating to hear nineteenth cen-
tury women speak in their own words
about such intimate matters as court-
ship,pregnancy and marital relation-
ships.Harriet Beecher Stowe,for ex-
ample,recognized that the reality
of married life included"wearing,
wasting days and nights"but luckily
she had the moral wit to inform her
clergyman husband that God didn't in-
tend the family to be her"chief good
and portion.”
A number of women are quite can-
did about feminine sexual feelings in
the presumably reticent,even re-
pressive Victorian era.Elizabeth Cady
Stanton,for example,took Walt Whit-
man to task for his opinion in“There
is a Woman Waiting for Me”(1883)
that women needed forcing in order to | enjoy sex.And Elizabeth Blackwell
confessed to her niece in 1887 that
"From the age of seven when I first fell
in love...I have always been keenly
susceptible to the influence of sex."
The discipline Blackwell exercised to
achieve her career as America's first
woman doctor—she remained single—
was also demonstrated by nineteenth
century women as a whole.Degler
states that"The decline in fertility
(50%between 1800-1900)is certainly
the single most important fact about
women and the family in American
history."He attributes the decrease
primarily to the determination of
women in a time when few acceptable
means of contraception were available.
Readers of At Odds will be treated to
a rich variety of information served in
the same mix of personal and objective
data:changing attitudes to children
and child-rearing(the notion of "inno-
cent childhood”and even the practice
of having birthday parties began in this
period);the particular problems of
Afro-American and immigrant fami-
lies;the transformation of work as in-
dustrialization attracted women from
the home and farm;the space that
religion provided for women to exer-
cise leadership in pursuit of moral
causes that affected the family like
temperance and censorship.
A number of ironic conflicts are
