The review highlights troublesome narration moments, including confusing timelines and over-description without development. It discusses character dynamics around Jason Garrity, family hardships, and the author’s handling of faith, morality, and suffering, ending with unresolved curiosity about the protagonist’s final “At least they didn't let all that sin go unpunished.”

| ANSWER ASAMAN
by Taylor Caldwell.
(Putnam,$12.95)
Reviewed by JOAN HERMES,a free-
lance writer.
ALL the basic ingredients of a good,
juicy saga novel are here.A young man
rises from poverty to wealth, makes a
bad marriage,raises children—one ille-
gitimate,another deranged.One part-
ner takes to drink and dies, leaving the
survivor to face a happier future.Stock
figures abound,chock ful of wisdom
and sage comments on past,present
and future events.Why,then,is this
book so difficult to read?
From the start we get an inkling of
trouble ahead when Jason Garrity,the
book's hero,takes seventeen pages to
travel from his cottage to the outhouse.
It's small comfort that he has a re-
ligious experience on the way back
from the privy.
Jason's mother,Kate,is a widow
who takes in laundry to support Jason
and his siblings,John and Joan.John
is an aspiring priest with a voracious
appetite described in such lavish detail
that we come to dread the mention of
food,knowing what will follow.John
habitually trots off to mass, leaving his | Taylor Caidwell in 1965 | paper route for Jason to deliver. But
that's okay, because this way we meet
kindly Mr.Maggiotti,who will give
Jason several choice acres of land and
then die, passing on his shop and the
ethnic torch to Saul Weitzman.
Jason's friend Lionel helps him
deliver John's papers.He does this
because he has AN ULTERIOR MO-
TIVE.He wants to be there when
Jason hits the big time in the hotel
business.Lionel marries Jason's sister
Joan who is beautiful on the outside,
ugly on the inside, and a cripple to
boot.John and Joan hate Jason's guts
for reasons known only to the author,
and spend lots of time sitting around
the kitchen table,eyes glowing with
contempt for him.
This crew is overseen by grandpa
Bernard,a puzzling type,who speaks
one minute like a peat cutter, and the
next like a Rhodes scholar.Like all the
characters in this novel,Bernard is
over-described and under-developed.
Enter Patrick Mulligan,an inn-
keeper_in this small Pennsylvania
town.Patrick and his doxie Mrs.Lin-
don(who could “even appear brutal in
a nice way”)join with Jason to invent
Grossingers West.While this is going
on,Mulligan's daughter Patricia is out
in the bushes with Lionel.Jason mar-
ries Patricia and is unperturbed when
seven months later she gives birth to |
| --- | --- | --- |

| I WONDER why publishers take such
pains in their publicity and on their
book jackets to disguise the
