Assurance of Living Frogs for Experimentation:A Technique\n\nIn the standard biology course there alwaysseems to be a need for living specimens of onesort or another at the wrong time of the year.We have found that our one biggest headachesis ensuring ourselves of a good supply of frogsat the time when the class is considering topicssuch as circulation, the nervous system, etc. This usually finds us in mid-winter.Frogsare expensive when we buy them in the quanti-ties needed, and it is bothersome to have toorder and wait for the frogs. \nAt Greenport High School we have found amethod which has proved amazingly success-ful in maintaining a living collection of frogsfor an extended period of time. \nTo review a few facts about frogs:weknow that frogs are poikilothermos, and wealso know that frogs enter hibernation withthe onset of cold weather in the fall.We havea good idea of what frogs eat and also howmuch. The problem, then,is how to take ad-vantage of the frog's natural hibernation tend-ency and also keep them alive. \nIn early September, the members of thebiology class who were going to treat this asa special project, collected twenty frogs ofvarying sizes, all Rana catesbiana. When thefrogs were brought to the classroom they wereestablished in a twenty gallon terrarium.Peatmoss was used for the base and this was satu-rated with water.Three sides of the terrarium November 2021 \n# Frogs getting weekly bath\n\nwere covered with dark paper with the frontand top left open to the class. In the two weeksthat followed, the frogs were fed, bathed andhad their habitat cleaned once each week. The feedings consisted of about three ouncesof raw liver per frog. This had to be forceddown the frog by a rather interesting tech-nique.The three girls who performed thisrather strange operation considered themselvesfortunate to have six hands available for thework.Girl number one held the squirming, complaining frog;girl number two pried itsmouth open with a pair of forceps, and girlnumber three placed the meat in the frog’sthroat and proceeded to tamp it down intothe stomach by means of a glass rod.The frogwas then rinsed under cold water and placedwith its freshly fed brothers. \nIn this manner we were able to build upthe strength of the frogs and make sure all ofthem were well fed.We then decided thatit would be much easier to have just a fewfrogs around to feed rather than the entirefamily. The healthiest looking specimens wereselected and put into forced hibernation.Checking the refrigerator,we found that thetemperature was 10°C,and that the naturalmoisture of the interior was sufficient to keepthe frogs at an optimum hibernation environ-ment.We placed six frogs in a clean gallon \n# A Botanical Wonder for the Science Teacher\n\nGERALD P.HIRSCH,Ithaca,New York \nIn most cases, the delinquent requires apsychologist, but the serious student needs therain forest, jungle,or desert. How can you,the city teacher, satisfy the science student'sneeds?Oddly enough, the yellow pages ofyour phone book,or a directory to city parksand buildings offer some answers. \nThe yellow pages give the location of nu-merous commercial students who read anddream of rain forests, swamps, and deserts. \nmayonnaise jar and placed this in turn in the refrigerator for a period of one day. This took the metabolic rate of the frogs down to the in-active state, and we were able to handle them more easily the following day.We thenwrap","cbCaifyB1O8R6ujj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifyB1O8R6ujj","pdf",174075,"English","# Assurance of Living
