The foundation of the D86 Grading System is that our grades report Accurate, Actionable, and Accountable (3A’s) data. During the 2025SY, members of the Curriculum Leadership Team (CLT) examined the impact the grading system was having on communication, student growth and our Professional Learning Communities (PLC) . \nIn District 86, grades communicate achievement on course objectives and support meaningful student learning and growth. A gradebook will communicate to students, teachers, student support teams, parents, curriculum teams and school officials Accurate, Actionable, and Accountability reports of student progress. In the 2025 SY, members of the Curriculum Leadership Team examined our practices as it relates to the 3A’s; Accurate, Actionable, and Accountable. \nAs a result of that examination, several themes were identified, including a perceived gap between formative grades and summative grades. \n1. Communication of grades had gaps, particularly for individuals looking to support a students growth who did not have a direct link to the classroom environment \n2. There was a perceived gap between formative assessment grades and summative assessment grades \nProficiency based assessment, in general terms, is the connection between formative assessments and summative assessments. The concept is to teach standards, skills and content to students through daily instruction (practice) . Then to provide a ‘scrimmage’ / formative assessment that aligns to the ‘game’ / summative assessment. This standard operating procedure of practice/scrimmage/game or teach/formative/ summative assessment shall give the educator a better understanding of what a student needs. It will also teach students to own their academic progress, also known as student agency. Student agency is about students to understand what they need to work on prior to a summative assessment. The communication component is being addressed through professional learning over the next several years, Tony Riebel being the initial consultant on this practice. It is anticipated that the \npractice/scrimmage/game or teach/formative/summative assessment gap may require a long term approach to teaching, learning and assessment practices. The Curriculum Leadership Team (CLT) made a recommendation to consider professional development for all certified staff that would focus on assessment for learning. \nAssessment for Learning 2025-2028 Success Page 1 Updated September 2025 \nSuccess \nWhat does a good grading system look like and how does it meet the needs of a student? It is the appropriate school year to evaluate the ‘story’ our gradebooks are telling to students, parents, teachers and school administrators based on the examination of our gradebooks in the 2025 school year. The building leadership team would like our PLC’s to gain a better understanding of how assessments are tools to teach a student a particular goal, objective, skill or content. Formative assessments, in particular, are an instructional practice that perpetually and strategically changes based on a student's academic needs and outputs (Reibel, 3) . \nBy the end of the school year, when an educator examines their grading system, they will be able to state: \n● Tony Reibel has led a school wide professional development on assessment for learning / proficiency based assessment. \n● Tony Reibel has met with each department chair to discuss department goals for assessments. \n● Departments or curriculum teams have defined a proficiency based assessment practice that they are working towards \n● Department Chair has led at least one professional development session for their department \n● The dynamic shift and focus of the PLC’s will be from subjective curriculum discussion to objective stude","cbCaigEC77GWmtlw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigEC77GWmtlw","pdf",174519,"English","# Background, Context\n## Assessment for Learning Success\n# What does a good grading system look like?\n## Over Time\n# Why?\n## Student outcomes and student agency","[{\"question\":\"What foundation does District 86 use for its grades?\",\"answer\":\"The D86 Grading System is built on Accurate, Actionable, and Accountable (3A’s) data to support meaningful student learning and progress.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document define proficiency-based assessment?\",\"answer\":\"Proficiency-based assessment connects formative assessments to summative assessments by teaching standards and skills through daily instruction, then using aligned “scrimmage” formative checks to inform what a student needs next.\"},{\"question\":\"What outcomes are expected by the end of the school year?\",\"answer\":\"Educators should be able to describe district-wide assessment-for-learning professional development, department alignment on proficiency-based practice, PLC shifts toward objective student data, at least one unit of study using learned practices, and alignment with 5Essentials components.\"}]","Assessment for Learning Success 2026SY - Updated September 2025 | PDF"]
