It becomes formative when evidence is used to adapt teaching to students’ learning needs. Effective assessment provides feedback that teachers and pupils can use for self- and peer-assessment, modifying teaching and learning activities. Supporting the approach, the booklet summarizes evidence and classroom-based findings from the KMOFAP project and related teachers, and by theirpupils,in assessing themselves and eachother,to modify the teaching andlearning activities in which they areengaged.Such assessment becomes'formative assessment'when theevidence is actually used to adapt theteaching work to meet learning needs. \nAuthors'note \nThe work on wohich this booklet is based wassupported by grants from the NufieldFoundation and by the US National ScienceFoundation-the latter as part of theStanford University Classroom AssessmentProject to Improve Teaching and Learning(CAPITAL):we are very grateful for thissupport. The zwork could not have proceededwithout the generous co-operation andsupport of the Medway and OxfordshireLEAs,and of the six schools directlyinvolved. We are particularly indebted to theteachers of English, mathematics and sciencewho shouldered the burdens and risksinvolved in turning our tentative ideas intopractical working knowledge. \nCPaul Black,Christine Harrison,Clare Lee,Bethan Marshall andDylan Wiliam,2002 \n## The starting point:from Insidethe Black Box\n\nn 1998 we published this booklet'spredecessor Inside the Black Box(Black Wiliam,1998b).Over \nI \n20,000 copies have been sold and thework is widely quoted.Since then wehave learnt a great deal about thepractical steps needed to meet thepurpose expressed in the booklet's sub-title:Raising standards through classroomassessment. \nThe first part of Inside the Black Box setout to answer three questions. For thefirst of these: \nIs there evidence that improvingformativeassessment raises standards? \nthe answer was an unequivocal yes, aconclusion based on a review,by Black 8Wiliam(1998a),of evidence published inover 250 articles by researchers fromseveral countries. There have been fewinitiatives in education with such astrong body ofevidence to support aclaim to raise standards. This positiveanswer led naturally to the secondquestion: \nIs there evidence that there is room forimprovement? \nHere again, the published evidence gavea clear and positive answer, presenting adetailed picture which identified threemain problems. The first was that theassessment methods that teachers use arenot effective in promoting good learning. The second was that marking andgrading practices tend to emphasisecompetition rather than personalimprovement. The third problem wasthat assessment feedback often has anegative impact, particularly on pupilswith low attainments who are led tobelieve that they lack ‘ability'and arenot able to learn. \nHowever,for the third question theanswer was less clear: \nIs there evidence of how to improve formativeassessment? \nWhilst the evidence provided many ideasfor improvement,it lacked the detail thatwould enable teachers to implementthem in classroom practice. It was arguedthat what teachers needed was:A varietyof living examples of implementation, byteachers with whom they can identify andfrom whom they can both derive comvictionand confidence that they can do better, andconcrete examples of what doing better meansin practice.Since that booklet waspublished,we have planned andimplemented a programme in which agroup of teachers has been supported in \ndeveloping innovative practices in theirclassrooms, drawing on the ideas in thebooklet.Whilst this has amply confirmedthe original proposals,it has also added awealth of new findings which are bothpractical and authentic. Thus,we arenow confident that we can set out soundadvice for the improvement of","cbCaipl2ihGxWlya","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipl2ihGxWlya","pdf",2898139,28,"English","#
