All existing Accelerated ReaderTM (ARTM) and Accelerated MathsTM (AMTM) customers will be upgraded. STARTM now provides an all-through assessment for students from Reception to year 11 for reading and maths that will help teachers to assess and monitor progress without levels. Using skills-based questions and incorporating learning progressions, the new STAR Assessments have been built for the new national curriculum. \nWhat are STAR Assessments? \nSTAR Assessments are used for screening, progress monitoring and diagnostic assessment in reading, maths and early literacy. They are computer-adaptive, efficiently determining students’ attainment level in much less time than classic paper-based tests. The assessments have been proven as valid and reliable, correlating strongly with other tests. \nSTAR Early LiteracyTM is a baseline assessment for students with less than a 100-word sight vocabulary. It assesses 41 skills in critical early literacy domains for emergent readers. Tests can be completed in as little as 10 minutes without assistance from a teacher. It is typically used by Reception class students, those with special educational needs, and those who speak English asan additional language. It identifies specific aspects of reading that students need to develop before they can become independent readers. \nSTAR ReadingTM assesses reading skills for students in years 1 to 11. It identifies the exact level of students’ reading proficiencyand indicates what concepts should be taught next, on an individual or group basis. It is also suitable for students in Reception once they have acquired a 100-word sight vocabulary. It provides nationally norm-referenced reading scores. Tests are typically completed in less than 20 minutes. \nSTAR MathsTM assesses mathematics skills for students in Reception to year 11. It identifies the exact level of students’ maths proficiency and indicates what concepts should be taught next, on an individual or group basis. Students taking the STAR Maths assessment should have some basic fundamental reading and maths skills. It provides nationally norm-referenced reading scores. Tests are typically completed in less than 20 minutes. \nHow often can STAR tests be administered? \nSTAR is typically administered three or four times each year as a screening and progress-monitoring tool. STAR results will inform termly planning and guide differentiated teaching for groups of students. \nTests can be administered as often as weekly as part of more intensive intervention strategies. Because of the substantial size of the item bank in STAR, students can take tests weekly without seeing the same questions repeating. Students can take STAR tests as often as necessary with a single licence, and because tests last only twenty minutes it is a viable tool for informing intervention on a regular basis. \nDeveloped in collaboration with \nHow does STAR work? \nComputer-adaptive testing \nSTAR Assessments are administered online through Renaissance Learning’s cloud-based hosted site. They are computer-adaptive, meaning that the items students see are selected intelligently based on their previous responses. The test therefore feels just right for the student, asking questions neither too easy nor too hard. As students answer questions correctly, they see more difficult items next. As they answer them incorrectly, the items become slightly less difficult. Over the course of a 34-question test, STAR pinpoints a student’s attainment level with a high degree of accuracy. Typically lasting just twenty minutes, STAR tests are substantially more efficient than paper-based and non-adaptive assessment systems. \nItem-response theory \nSTAR Assessments are able to ascertain not just test scores but the specific skills students have mastered. This is possible because STAR uses a psychometric practice k","cbCaike5iHXe0dIm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaike5iHXe0dIm","pdf",388959,"English","# STAR Assessments overview\n## What are STAR Assessments?\n## STAR Early Literacy\n## STAR Reading\n## STAR Maths\n# Administration frequency\n## How often can STAR be administered?\n## Weekly testing and licence use\n# How STAR works\n## Computer-adaptive testing\n## Item-response theory\n## Learning progressions","[{\"question\":\"What are STAR Assessments used for in reading and maths?\",\"answer\":\"They support screening, progress monitoring, and diagnostic assessment in reading and maths (and early literacy).
